on june 11th 2001, the gameboy advance was released in north america. as nintendo said when it came out, the gameboy advance was like a super nintendo in the palm of your hand. it had backwards compatibility with gameboy and gameboy color games, and had 15 hours of battery life. however, what it lacked was a backlit screen, one similarity that came from the past two gameboy systems.
in early year of 2003, the gameboy advance SP was released. this was a slightly smaller gameboy advance that could flip open to play, and after the complaints about the original gameboy advance model's screen, this one came with a backlit screen, and the backwards compatibility stayed. and for the first time ever for gameboy, we were given a rechargeable battery with an AC adapter in each box.
in the year of 2005, one last gameboy advance system was released, called the gameboy micro. this was a much smaller system, and came with different faceplates. unfortunately, this was the only gameboy advance feature that couldn't play gameboy and gameboy color games. i wasn't a fan of the micro though, as the screen was so small that you had to squint just to read text dialogue
