Immediately, we all think of the smiling Buddha, but buddhism does depict life in a negative way?

Buddhists seek to detach themselves from desire
Buddhists believe that life is suffering
Buddhists believe that the world is an illusion
Buddhists believe that nothing is permament since everything dies
Buddhists seek escape from this cyclical life to reach Nirvana

I've been reading up on Buddhism for a while now and it seems to me that Buddhism promotes withdrawal from society.

    What do you guys think?

Well according to them (as well as other belief systems like the Amish), society is the evil that's causing all the problems in the world, so the further you are away from it, the better off you are.
