I ask every priest I have met that same question and so far none have answered a yes to it... they pick their favourite bits I suppose.

I've read a great deal of it. I did attend Catholic school for 12 years, after all, and eventually I recovered part of my brain with lots of rock music, late nights and sugar.

Actually, hardly anyone was able to follow the Bible before the Renaissance, as nobody was allowed to own a Bible that was translated into the common language. All the Bibles back then were in Latin, which only the priests of the Catholic church could understand. If someone was caught with a Bible that had been translated into the common language, they were burnt at the stake. If anyone attempted to try and translate the Bible into the common language, they were burnt at the stake. The church was completely corrupt and power hungry, and they forced people to follow the Bible the way they saw fit...not the way Jesus wanted. So many things that the church taught completely contradicted the Bible, and the Church did not want people discovering this. The Renaissance era actually began around the time that the Bible was finally translated so anyone could read it, and Martin Luther (a former priest) led the Protestant reformation against the Catholic Church.

It comes down to just opening the Bible and reading it. You have to get the organized religion part out of your minds because this is what had given the Bible a bad rap.

Stop seeing God, Jesus and the Bible as gossiping old women with their hats, a sweaty preaches yelling fire and brimstone trying to get you to donate and if you do anything wrong you will burn in hell forever.

If you read the Bible we do not go to hell or heaven. This is something that man has created to keep you coming to the church. When we die we are dead, only a few will go to heaven. Just read the Bible, read the New Testament first and then read the Old. Read one of the newer translations, not the original King James as it's too confusing to understand. Read the Bible with an open mind and even if you don't think God is real, so many questions about life will be answered.

I guess what I'm saying is don't knock it until you try it.

Goddamnit, Bassman. Here is was, enjoying my life, when, out of boredom, I decide to lurk about RJ to see what the old crew is up to. When, low and behold, I see this thread. Now I gotta reactivate my account just so I can log on and give you a cyber-slap on the back of the head.

Now, back on topic. Would the world be a "better place" if everyone believed in the Bible? Of course it would be! Why? Because everyone would be in agreement. The same thing could be said for the Koran or the Tao de Ching. If everyone in the world was in agreement then there would be world peace. The End.

But seriously, how boring would that be? The thing that makes being human so great is our ability to have free-will. We have the ability to make our own decisions, no matter how irresponsible or selfish they may be, and we have the ability to learn from our dumb mistakes. Pondering our origins, having different philosophies, disagreeing, debating, and fighting or even suffering for our beliefs is all part of being human, and it's a great thing. Sure, there's a lot of wars and strife among the human race, but that will all eventually be worked out, then there will be new conflicts. There will always be conflicts, there will always be oppression, but, because of these things, there will also always be courage, heroes, and inspiration for future heroes.
I hear Christians say, in defense of God, that, "He did not create us to be robots." However, if we all believed and followed the Bible (or any other religious text) that's exactly what we would all be, robots.

In defense of Bassman, I don't think he meant the world would be a better place if everyone believed the Bible to be the 100% literal Word of God...but if people just followed some of its teachings more, like "Love your neighbor as yourself" and "Love your enemies"...which is something most people have a very hard time doing.

    Welcome back, Matt.

    Agreed.

Personally I agree with Carlin that the reason we have too many stupid and weak people is that we are saving too many fucking lives. Which is also costing alot of fun.

Organized religion has become completely focused on ceremony and symbolism. Even the valuable lessons and stories in holy books end up being overshadowed by the practices of the religion's followers rather than on the lessons of its founders.

"If more people would read the bible the world would be a better place because everyone would be in agreenment." That's exactly the problem with that. Everyone would be against gay people for example. The ideals the church has are amazingly non-jesusian. In the pages it says he forgave people and accepted them as themselves. Church couldn't be more far from this idea. If everyone in the world thought like the church people, we'd do all kinds of crazy stuff in the "name of the lord". I'm sooo happy things aren't that way and people actually think for themselves.

Ha Ha Ha funny one Matt! You left out video games, closing logos, furries , comic books and Nickelodeon fans.

I think some of you guys are missing my point. I never said people should follow the Bible to the letter, but that we should consider following its basic philosophy. Right now millions follow the Bible, but we all do it a little differently. It seems to be a trend for people to go against its basic teachings because a few versus are not politically correct.

That's what I think is weird about it too. Every person uses literally whatever they want and what suits them best and disregards what they don't want to use. I haven't read the whole bible but I think it doesn't say "you can do this if you want but you can ignore that". That's so amusing that people are so selfish that they do that. Then again, if you'd take all of it literally you'd be stuck. "Turn the other cheek" and "Eye for an eye". It's not the most logical fictional scripture.

Different groups interpret it differently and follow different portions more strictly that others. God doesn't expect us to be perfect and knows we will sin.

I'm not a religious person, but I generally follow the teachings of the Bible. If you just follow the rules it isn't that hard and life can still be fun. The problem is people think they can beat the system and make their own rules to fulfill their own selfish desires. Like I said in my personal experience it never works out well.

The "Eye for an eye" is Old Testament. Like I stated before The New Testament is what Christians are suppose to follow and therefore (unless you're Jewish) we should "Turn the other cheek".

There's this thing called conscience. Everybody has it. Those who don't are sick and should get help. These include people like mass murderers and pedofiles. Mentally ill folks. Every healthy person knows it's wrong to kill another person or cheat your wife without reading it from the bible or because Moses got ten commandments on the top of the mountain. It's in our DNA, not in the teachings of the bible. And you're influenced by your parents and how they raise you. I've known this and I've never read more than the Genesis from it. It's just common sense. It's amazing how many people are and have been killed because they believe in god and they've done the "god's work". It's people's own stupidity to kill other people but they're even more stupid when they do it because god told them so. And if you believe in god you have no right to say it's not true and god didn't tell them anything. That would be selfish. It's just sad this whole thing.

Of course, what does does "turn the other cheek" mean? Does it mean to ignore your attackers, or to peacefully stand up to them? What does it mean to "accept Jesus into your heart"? Even the New Testament is cryptic in its meanings. How about we all just obey the law and abide by the constitution?

Antti is right about one thing, people do tend to carefully pick and choose which parts of the bible are convenient to follow.

I am an atheist ...I had recently a hardcore christian, whom claimed it is better to worship satan, than not believe. I find most of the people I know whom are Bible bashers, are among the stupidest people I have known. It's almost like, if you worship Christ, there is no need for common sense, and it seems to be a ticket to discrimination.

    - btw if you stupid Christian fucks start on me- I don't fucking care- believe in your space man that knocks up virgins...why not look at the cult of hector..an egyptian sect..with ...a virgin birth, same "miracles" as our supposed lord.
