The Man of Steel issue number 1 with Swamp Thing were my first comic book purchases then later i bought other DC titles like JLA, Flash, Aquaman, some Wonder-Womans (i had a crush on her thanks to the animated Super Powers and live-action TV show), when i was 4 back in 86. But i wasn't into Batman cause he had no powers or wasn't a monster, but thanks to seeing Burton's movie in theaters when i was 7 i became a fan of him as i learned you don't need powers or be a monster to be a superhero as i collected Batman, Catwoman (i too had a crush on her when i was a kid), Robin and Nightwing with Detective Comics since including some of Vertigo's mature readers titles like Hellblazer: John Constantine and The Sandman. My parents had no problem of me reading comics that say "suggested for mature readers" or reading comics that contain language, graphic violence, gore, drug use, nudity and some sex.

I also bought sci-fi/horror/fantasy comics during my childhood like reprints of EC titles like Tales from The Crypt (thanks to the TV show), Vault of Horror, Weird Science, Haunt of Fear and Crime Suspense as i own them now in trade paperbacks. Even other stuff like Spawn, The Crow, Judge Dredd, and other independent stuff.
"Nobody wants to see vampire killers or vampires either! apparently all they want are demented madmen running around in ski-masks hacking up young virgins"-Peter Vincent from Fright Night.
