How harsh should the system be on juvenile offenders?

In the early 90s juvenile crime was at a record high. To combat this, penalties for juvenile offenders were stiffened. Since the early 90s juvenile crime has been on the decline though the offenders age is getting younger.

In 2005 the federal courts ruled that people under 18 can not be sentenced to death. Before this ruling there were just under 100 juveniles on death row in the USA.

I post a little in another thread about the story about the 8 year old boy by the name Christian Romero accused of killing is father and another man. For the story read below.

    http://justicefordjinn.org/Christian_Ryan_Romero__Page.html (warning music on page)

This site also has other cases of children being treated like adults in the system.

I think more should be done to get these kids counseling and they should not be held beyond their 21st birthday unless they are severely mentally ill. Furthermore they should have their record wiped clean of any crimes committed under the age of 17.

    What are your thoughts?

Interesting topic. Its so hard to put down hard and fast rules about age, you know. In those teenage years, its really a case-by-case thing.

i dont think it should be wiped clean just because you were young. thats not an excuse. ive known plenty of kids i grew up with who are terrible people who have gotten the opportunity to still be terrible because of their age. although ive known alot of folks who have gone through the "system" just to come out worse. thats quite the can of worms you have opened sir.

I don't think we should be locking children up in jail. If they are doing bad things they should get the help they need to teach them to do right. Putting them with jail just makes them learn how to be better criminals. Jail is where people should go when they are a lost hope. A 15 year old still has a chance.

They had a thing on 20/20 (or was it Prime Time) about this. They sent the kids to a place more like a camp and they all worked together through their problems. While it didn't help all of them it proved to work better than a juvenile detention center. All of them were there for less serious crimes.

I researched this back in the early 2000s. Kids that attend these kinds of boot camp programs some religious base have been abused. Look up Mountain Park Academy and Arizona Boys' Ranch. These are two of many that have abused teens even killing them.

What needs to be done, you ask? Firm slaps on bare, bent over buttocks. No more than three per offense. And parents need to administer them long before they wind up like this. However, our backwards and cluster fucked gubmint won't allow this, let alone if a group of teens attack you, or else you get thrown in the slammer, and you can consider your life pretty much over. Ugh.

And fwiw Bassman, once you commit certain crimes (usually sex offenses, kidnapping, and murder) your life is pretty much over.

One more thing: IMHO, once you hit legal driving age (usually 16) you should always be tried as an adult. For 15 and younger to be tried as adults, it should depend on what they did.

I think we should bring caning to the USA like they do in Singapore. That would curb juvenile crime!

Hell just give them a good old school paddling in the courtroom.

Cincinnati OH wanted to do something similar for minor and non-violent offenses... However they get a choice of a paddle, public humiliation, or jail time. :(
