I don't care which one came first, or who ripped off who, just wondering if anyone has seen the 60's anime or 1997 movie? I'd heard of Kimba the White Lion years before the Lion King, but never actually watched it.

I have and what I remember is is that he had two faithfull side-kicks a gazelle and a bird. His father died and kimba kept the hide in his cave.

I think kimba's father was killed by poachers or something when he was trying to rescue him as a cub.

But its pretty good and the action is far much quicker-paced than Speed Racer of the same time period.

I just rented the 97 movie. It was nothing like the Lion King. It reminded me more of Princess Mononoke. I wouldn't say it was better than the LK, but it was more serious than the latter and didn't have any singing animals tg.

To be totally honest, I don't know much about Kimba the white Lion, but I love Disney's the Lion King. But here's a few interesting points, I do wish to point out....

    1) From what I understand Disney thought they were going to own the rights to Kimba and perhaps jumped the gun with it. They did the same thing with the Muppets for a way there. It was like "Oh we own it...oh no we don't," "Oh we're going to own it soon, so it just as good as ours," "No we don't own it." Disney has wanted the muppets even before the death of Jim Henson in 1990. they didn't officially own them til 2004.

    2) The original designs for the Lion King did in fact showcase a white lion. Could it have been Kimba, maybe?

    3) Matthew Broderick (whom voiced the adult Simba) has admitted that he thought he was doing some sort of remake of Kimba the White Lion. He actually did tell people "I'm Kimba."

    4) Interesting side note, but the Simpsons were the only show that put this whole controversy to the public light. In the episode "Round Springfield," famous for the death of Lisa Simpson's mentor Bleeding Gums Murphy. A big Mufasa looking lion did appear in the clouds saying..."You must avenge my Death, Kimba...ur, I mean Simba!"

You must avenge my death Kimba. I mean Simba. Luke, I am your father. This is CNN. Will you guys pipe down?! I'm trying to say goodbye to Lisa! We are sorry. Ah, gotta love James Earl Jones. Anyway, back on subject: I watched Kimba the White Lion once, didn't like it all that much. I respect it though. It was the first anime in color.

So simpsons were the first to really bring light to this. I don't hate disney, but I kind of don't like when one company tries to own everything popular. It's kind of like they did with marvel. Why don't you make your own comic book characters rather than buying a competitors and and messing them up. I'd be shocked if the disney didn't start messing up marvels characters at some point.

I'm kinda late to this thread, but I bought a few discs of Kimba from the short-lived $2 rack at Walmart (not the $5 bin). They had some sketchy looking low-budget animation dvds.

Anyway, I got almost through one disc and never bothered with the other. Maybe because the transfer was atrocious and I had little to no knowledge of the character.

Ben meaning to check this kimba out. I might get netflix and see if they have stuff like this on it. Were those anime low budget or just older stuff that can't match up to modern day quality?
