Is it right to be a "snitch"?

I grew up with the belief that you never snitch on another person for doing wrong. Areas where this belief is common also generally have the most crime. Here is one side.

    Drugs:
If every drug dealer and drug house was reported to the police there would be less of them. We know illegal drugs also bring crime.

    Bullying:
If every student in school would report bullying bullies would think twice about doing it.

    Assault:
Hitting another person is against the law. If people know they will not be reported to the police they will be more inclined start fights with people and hit those they disagree with.

    Murders:
If a person commits murder allowing them to get away with it may cause another person to be killed. If a person will murder once they will murder again. If people know others will narc them out they will think twice about doing it.

    Child abuse;
If people know they will lose their children and go to jail they will think twice before abusing their child.

Some people snitch over petty stuff just to see another person get in trouble. What the person is doing might be wrong, but is not really hurting anyone. Here are some examples.

Reporting your neighbor for stealing cable.
Reporting your neighbor for breaking a dead restriction.
Reporting a co-worker that is breaking a company rule.
Flagging videos and post for copyright and comment that goes against your way of thinking.
Calling a tow truck or police because someone parked in the handicap parking when there are still other spaces available.
Reporting someone that snuck into a show.
Reporting someone's drug use. Like telling a cop you saw some teens smoking weed in the back.
Calling the cops on a party rather than manning up and asking the people to tone it down first.

So when is it OK to snitch?

I think it's ok to snitch when you're saving someone from harm.

It's not ok to be a snitch if you're in a Mafia.

I agree. Look at the crime and judge for yourself. Ask, "Are they really harming anyone with their actions?" If the answer is no, then just them let get caught on their own. Or maybe give them a friendly warning to remind them of the consequences. example, "Dude, if you get caught stealing cable, you're to be a lot of trouble." Or if you see a few kids smoking weed, "Uh, guys, you might want to do that somewhere else."

For things like assalt, child abuse, murder; of course, call the police.

When you see someone trying to brutally kill someone else, what are you to do?

If you hear Lil' Jimmy say the eff-word, what are you to do?

If the action can't possibly affect anyone else harmfully, what's the point of snitching? However, if you see someone getting killed, you should everything possible to stop their death.

    Interesting topic.

I agree with Shazbot. If it is to protect an innocent person, then yes.

    Otherwise, no.

I think we are all all on the same page.

Now here is a question. If you had a son or daughter in their teens that did something bad, would you report them?

I think I would only if I felt they may hurt someone in the future even if it was murder. I just think it's better not to get mixed up in the system if you don't have to.

Tell him never to say that again and/or the people he shouldn't say it to, like parents or strangers for his safety.

If its something serious like murder or robbery its better it better to report because these go against society norms as a whole but if its something like catching them red-handed doing drugs, or in possession of something illegal, personally I'd warn them about the consequences of repeating the offence.

This is assuming the incident takes place in my house because I'd consider it a private matter which needs to be dealt within the home.
Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air?

You know I have spoken with some parents that said they would call the police on their kid if they found weed on them.

Some people are just brainwashed that the police are the good guys. All they do is complicate things and in some cases can destroy a persons life. Once you have a felony conviction against you, you will never get a descent job.

Also people that would report their kid are the same ones that throw them out of the house at 18. I truly think parents like that have never truly bonded with their child and they are probably the reason why they are acting out in the first place.

Now I have seen other parent bend over backwards to protect their kids only to have them end up hurt them.

Juvenile records are sealed to the public at least in my state.

Yes most states keep juvenile records sealed while they are juveniles, but not all states wipe a person's record clean when they are 18 or even 21.

I might make a separate thread on this, but children do not get the same rights in the legal system that adults do. Watch the movie "The Interrogation of Michael Crowe" and you will get just a taste of it. Most juvenile offenders are tricked or forced into a confession and end up taking a plea bargain. This is happening with the 8 year old boy that supposedly killed his father and the fathers friend with a hunting rifle. The police had no other leads and went after the kid just like in the Michael Crowe case. In case of the 8 year old boy now 9 they wanted to give him life in prison. So it would not go to trial he took a plea deal and is still awaiting sentencing.

Again the police are NOT your friends avoid them at all cost.
