He's my favorite Christian author. Well, I guess he's the only Christian author I really like.

I'm reading "Mere Christianity" right now, and he makes a great argument for what he calls "Christian Behavior", which is not significantly different than the idea most people have of proper behavior.

He makes a virtually airtight argument for an intelligent God in that book which is really hard to refute.

Super good book for anyone who wants to know the basics of Christianity. I'm not a Christian myself, but I am finding it very interesting and not at all what I thought it would be like. I was first turned off by the idea of reading a book on Christianity, but its not all this Jesus ass-kissing like I thought it would be.

He's cool because he wasn't always a Christian. He was an atheist who actually converted later in life to Christianity. Very interesting dude.

The only book I read from C.S. Lewis was The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe. His stories maybe Christian themed and that is why authors like Philip Pullman, of The Golden Compass fame, despise him. That's Pullman's problem.

J.R.R. Tolkien was also a Christian. He was friends with Lewis (both were teachers at Oxford), and his influence played a big part in Lewis becoming a Christian.

There are Christian themes in the Lord of the Rings, just not as obvious as in the C.S. Lewis books.

LOTR also has a blatant anti-Nazi message, although Tolkien denied there was any influence from (then) current events into his work.

Yes I knew Lewis and Tolkien were friends, they were in a literary society called The Inklings weren't they?

If there are christian themes in the Lord of the Rings, I wonder why Ian McKellen, who is an atheist, would be in the Lord of the Rings films. Just out of curiosity.

This is kind of a dumb point. Why would he NOT play Gandalf? Why would he pass up the opportunity to portray one of the most beloved characters in modern day literature from the most popular epic in modern day literature? "Christian themes" has nothing to do with it.
Also, just because somebody is an athiest doesn't mean they're anti-Christian.

Christopher Lee wanted the role of Gandalf but by the time the right film came along, he was too old (his own admission) so he took the role of Saruman instead. Lee's still sprightly for a very old man, it must have been all that blood drinking in Hammer horror films which kept him young.

I'm with you MattNash, you can be athiest but not necessarily hate religion. You don't subscribe to it, is all. And the role of Gandalf was a good one, too good to pass by for a respected actor.

I know! I bet he was extremely honored to get the role.

I would say that being an atheist (someone who claims proof of the non-existence of God) would, by definition be anti-Christian.

I guess you're right though that they don't have to totally hate them.

I have encountered two types of atheists. The first type doesn't believe in God, but they could care less if anyone else does, and some of them may even feel that religion or belief in a higher being brings something positive to society. The second type of atheist is the Richard Dawkins/Christopher Hitchens type who doesn't believe in God, and they feel nobody else should either. They basically think that belief in God is a disease, and they are the cure.

What really pisses off atheists is when you tell them that you were once one too and that you hope that they grow out of it.

There's nothing wrong with being an Atheist. You don't have to believe in God to be a decent person.

Its just kind of frustrating to me because they arent getting what they could out of life.

But then again, there would be no way that anyone saying anything to me would have swayed me from being athiest. So I guess its gotta be how its gotta be, you know?

There should be a religion surrounding those flying monkeys from The Wizard of Oz. I wouldn't be in it, but there should at least be one.
