Same reason that NASCAR wouldn't likely survive in Europe; different audiences.

I guess because it doesn't play a role in American culture or history. No sport's popularity will ever surpass that of football or baseball in America, hockey in Canada, or football/soccer in England etc

there are so many sports that are played in America, most of our athletes play in our big 3 sports.. Football, Baseball, and Basketball

it's a different ball game around the rest of the world

You mean to White and Black Americans?

The same reason lacrosse (Native American origin BTW), rugby, polo and cricket is irrelevant. I think too many other sports are common place here. American Football is really big as is baseball and basketball. Golf and tennis is big too, but has a more selective audience. Maybe sports including soccer are not popular here just because Americans want to be different.

my take is that soccer is more accessible. it's easier to get a bunch of people together to kick a ball than it is to pad up or get equipment for football or baseball.

that is why basketball is next in worldwide popularity imo.

all of the countries best atheletes play soccer. all of ours play other "more meaningful" sports. i mean, come on.....what if we put a fast Terrell Owens on a soccer field.....or any DB on a rugby field?

we don't take it seriously like other countries do. to them the rivalry is equivalent to rocky vs. the russian.

    we could give two shits.

I'm a baseball guy myself. Soccer used to be my favorite, but now I'd put it at third, behind that and tennis. Unless bowling counts...

I think the reason American's and Canadian's for that matter don't care about soccer so much is that compared to other countries their team doesn't stand a chance. We are countries that pride ourselves on winners and our greatness that's why Canadians love hockey, and Americans love football we dominate in it and it gives us bragging rights. Neither country has come close to any type of domination in soccer so we choose to just pass it off as a fun pass time instead of the greatest sport ever created.

I don't think that's the reason, because I'm pretty sure our baseball and football teams get good in the first place because our country puts so much emphasis on the sports to begin with. And I'm pretty sure there are a lot of South American countries that are particularly good at soccer.

Not enough positive reinforcement in soccer.

Dudes can kick that ball around for an hour before anyone scores a goal.

Look at the more popular sports... they are constantly scoring something... your efforts are rewarded in a tangible way in the big 3.

In basketball, people are scoring all the time.

In football and baseball, even when people aren't scoring, their personal stats are being tallied.

That's what makes the difference for me and probably a lot of other Americans.

Maybe we should double the size of the net and see if that makes soccer more viable. I know I wouldn't watch it anyways because soccer is lame.

that's pretty ignorant.. doubling the size of the net would only hurt the sport.. the best games are usually tied 0-0 coming down to the wire.. it's a giant chess match, and it just shows the amount of skill players have when they actually do score.. plus, the precision passing that those guys do is wayyyy harder than it looks.. very difficult sport.. a lot harder than people believe

Soccer is ok, but it just isn't as entertaining to watch as so many other sports.

So is American football, but even more so.

I know it's a hard sport and i repect the athletes a lot, but that doesn't increase its watchability. Winter biathlon (crosscountry skiing and shooting out targets with a small rifle) is one of the hardest sports in the world and it is about as fun to watch as Celeste eating a can of frosting.

That sounds like how I would appreciate a good pitcher's duel.

I wasn't talking about preserving the sanctity of soccer, I was just talking about getting more people to watch it.

i understand.. soccer's catching on a little in the US, but it will just never be as big as the other major sports.. American Football fits our culture best

IMO, the World Cup is fun to watch, whether you are a soccer fan or not
