It sounds weird in itself, but it's becomes part of life more than it seems like a chore. Many have been saved on their deathbeds because of Jesus and Jesus alone, not because of how many times they went to church or got baptized, or even walking an old lady across the street. It's that amazingly simple.

    Cool question Matt

But this is according to a book (the Bible) which was written by human beings. Isn't this book also a symbol? You may say that the book is the "Word of God", but according to a Deist, the entire universe is the "Word of God". Shouldn't the entire universe, His magnificent creation, be more of a representation of who He is then a "black and white" book of morals written by man?

The Bible was written by humans through Him, which is why it is so holy. Other wise it would be there opinions, not Gods truth.
You dont know them but they do!!

    You don't know that.
But you do know God gave us the universe. So shouldn't the universe be a greater "word of God" than the Bible?

It is able to be known because of the prophecy that are indicated in the Bible itself. It is said that the odds of all the prophecies coming true by sheer coincidence are the same odds of filling the universe with sand and painting one single grain red and being able to pick that one grain out. It's simply amazing how accurate the Bible is, which makes it purely reliable. Thanks Matt.

It really isn't that accurate, at all. In fact it's very inaccurate.
But if you're happy believing in it then I'm happy for you.

Ha, I don't want you to be happy for me I want you to look into how accurate it really is. How sometimes what seem to be contradictions are actually just misinterpretations.
    Love you, man.

in what way is it accurate? in the fact that the number of genereations between joseph and david vary a extremely huge amount between gospels, or that it says that jesus will be a decendant of david, when in fact it was joseph who was a decendant, and joseph is not the father of christ?

it's accurate, I tell you. It's easier to throw it at someone who is 40 feet away and hit them, as opposed to, say, throwing a magazine at them....especially if you put a rubber band around it to keep the pages shut.

Honestly though, I'm not sure which book is more accurate...I may have to perform accuracy tests on the Quran as well.

the filters at work are horrible....I can't even do a google search on terms that include the word 'horror' without the results being blocked for 'tasteless'.

If you don't agree with the Bible, don't read it and leave it at that.

Free Will comes from Awareness, Awareness comes from self discovery, God lives within each one of us, You will never be as beautiful as you are right now, but to say anything in absolute's is being an egotistical closed minded fool....which means you are unaware, thus not free from the trappings of the world and sin (yes sin is real, sin is just different for each individual...all religion/spirituality is a personal thing). Sin, is whatever drags you down in life or puts you on the road to death, pain, or suffering. I hope you get that, because if you don't....you're not aware.

If everyone felt this way about his or her religious beliefs, then there wouldn't be a problem.

I never thought about it that way, I guess you're right...it would simplify things greatly.

Good point. A lot of people (myself included to some extent) practice contempt prior to investigation. So that would mean that I could take one example of seeing a Christian person doing something un-Christ-like and using that to call the whole religion poopy.

I think God reveals himself differently to different people in a way that we can understand him. And of course, if you aren't looking for God, you can find all the evidence you want to show that he isn't around.

Just in my time posting here at RJ, I've went from fervent atheist to agnostic to a believer in God, but I'm not a religious person. I've just seen and felt God work in such a way that I cannot deny that something is working beyond my explanation.

Its nice looking to see where religious people have it right rather than where they are wrong.

I know what you mean, I went from being an atheist, to an agnostic, to Christian sympathizer, to atheist again, to deist and now I'm thinking about giving paganism a shot.

Its tough to find something that works for us, but I think its a fluid thing. Our understanding of God can broaden and deepen over time if we're feeding it the right stuff.

I'm reading some Carlos Casteneda, a book on Sartre and Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis right now. Those offer some good insight.

Except for Sartre... he was such an egoist. Solipsism is inherently a little kid's way of looking at the world, no matter how you try to dress it up.

I think you'd dig Tales of Power and Journey to Ixtlan, Matt.
