Since evil and good are both human inventions, my answer is yes.

When are you going to rephrase it?

I would say that we can act with God's will or against it. But that isn't good or evil.

It all has to do with the extent that we let our ego rule our lives. When the ego runs rampant, those are things we describe as "evil". When we act without ego, we are more selfless, and this is often described as "good".

I'm not using "ego" in the Freudian sense, but rather as a layman like myself might use it.

    Think of it this way:

Why do parents have to teach their kids NOT to do so many things? Teach em NOT to steal? NOT to lie to them? NOT to do drugs or drink or this and that and that and this?

To me, it seems that you gotta teach kids what not to do bad alot more than telling them what they can do good. So I'm choosing that we're naturally born fucked up in the head.

Instead of good and evil, I asked if humans are rational or irrational beings

People are born selfish. From the time people are babies they want the world to revolve around their every need and want. Society has to break people of that. Selfishness bears evil behavior, so yes I think people are born evil.

Well put. I also believe people are born evil...or as Christians like myself would call it, with a sin nature.

Good and Evil are irrelevant. People are animals. Animals are primarily concerned with survival. Therefore, Rational humans value survival, no matter what "good" or "evil" labels are attached. This leads to irrational behavior that is both good (sacrificing one's life) and evil (murder). Since irrational behavior exists, humanity is irrational.

What you claim to be irrational is just our subjective view on rationality.

Ever watch animals rut? They basically rape each other every chance they get. Human beings might classify this as irrational. Yet, if you think about it, isn't it completely rational to want to satisfy one's own carnal desires?

summing up what some people have said, i think 'good' and 'evil' are subjective, and therefore we cannot say if humans are born naturally good or evil, only that they are born with an innate sense of survival. to the western world, incest is generally seen as immoral, but in some cultures, it may be seen as perfectly normal. who has the right to say who is right or wrong in this context?

but then based on this system, who is to say that the western world has it completley correct, it has just as much justification than any other

I agree with most said here, however there are pure forms of good and evil, and I believe some people are born to be great helpers and others to be mass murderers...some things are bad in ALL corners of the world. I know my parents actually tested me from childhood to see things I would do...When I did something bad or good, they wouldn't tell me it was wrong or right, they asked me why I did it and how it made me feel. They said I would usually say, I dunno why I did it, I just wanted to...but when asked how I felt...when it was bad I would feel it weighing on my conscience and answer that it made me feel dirty(sic) and when I did something good I would smile and usually just say GOOD! So yes, I believe there is an innate set of morals due to my experiences. But that's just me. Peace.

i see where you're coming from there lingo, conmpletely. but could that innate feeling not be something you've learnt unconciously from watching your parents/ people around you?

I have experienced true evil in many forms. I thing evilness gets into people due to outside influences. We must teach children when they are young not to let those demons inside. This means doing what is right even when it's not popular and keeping bad people out of their lives. When you are around evil people they will pass it on to you. Even if they are your enemy their actions can cause you to do evil things in return.

While some people have some mental illnesses they are born with I don't think anyone is born evil.

But what defines something as evil? if it benifits more people than it harms, even if you think that action to be evil, surely it's just as possible that it is good?

People aren't born "good" or "evil". Every person is capable of performing both good deeds and evil deeds. The people themselves freely choose to commit good or evil acts. But I think a lot of outside influences such as family background/family troubles, peers, etc can contribute to a person's behavior.

I would have originally said good, but I think we are all born neutral. When we come into the world, we are just sponges, blank canvases that does not know what to expect and naturally take in everything that we observe. If we see peace and kindness from those around us, we are more likely to be peaceful and kind. If we see violence and hostility from those around us, we are more likely to be violent and hostile. It doesn't even matter if we get out of the aforementioned situations eventually, because up until a point (I would guess around the age of 13-16), our nature is what it is and there's no turning back. So to get back to the question at hand, we are born neutral, with life's events shaping us into either good or evil.

Hmmm depends....I think there is more temptation to be bad in America than other countries.

Usually foreign women are submissive to their husbands but sometimes they befriend Americanized independent women and take up their negative traits.

No, Humans are not born good or evil. That is determined by the path they choose to follow in life
