This to me seems like a real man's man kind of war.

I think a lot of it was fought in mud, which is bad to start with.

Plus, lots of people were getting sick, and I think I remember them saying that they used mustard gas. Despite what the name suggests, this actually isn't a yummy condiment in gas form, but is apparently somewhat toxic.

Also, can someone tell me why it started? Wasn't it something about some czar stealing the archduke ferdinand's girlfriend or something?

Seems like having the whole world fight a war would be overkill. Maybe the archduke ferdinand should have just beat up the czar.

lots of factors involved but Archduke Franz Joseph and his wife Sophia were assassinated while travelling in Sarajevo (now in Bosnia) by a Serb student called Gavillo Princip. Princip was hailed by a hero by Serbs who disliked being ruled by Austrian. Austria invaded Serbia as payback. Serbia called in political allies such as Russia and England (the Pommies kings and queens are related to the Serb royals). Austria called in its allies like Hungary and Germany. Huge shitfight over a killed off royal.
