The Fairness Doctrine was a policy of the FCC that required the holders of broadcast licenses both to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was in the Commission's view honest, equitable, and balanced. In 1987, the FCC abolished the Fairness Doctrine, prompting some to urge its reintroduction through either Commission policy or Congressional legislation. Right now talk radio is predominantly conservative with host such as Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Glenn Beck and Laura Ingraham. Most liberal talk shows have not been successful with the exception of a few such as Ed Shultz and shock jock Don Imus, .
Some people want to bring it back requiring each and every talk radio host to present on opposing point of view. The problem critics say is it will get in the way of the hosts freedom of speech and what issues they can discuss. Many also feel it's too vague and would be hard to enforce.
