Digging out the systems & the cartridges & hooking them all up is too much of a pain in the ass, plus emulators let you speed up slow parts (like endless text), save any time (without ridiculously long passwords or batteries that run dead & make you lose all your saves). I still have all my old systems & carts, but I prefer to play those games on emulators regardless, for the sheer convenience of it.
As far as virtual consoles go... Yeah, sure, lets fork out $200 for some cutting edge system, with a crappy controller system (the only good thing about wiimotes is when someone accidentally throws it through the TV), plus another $10 per game (or whatever the fee is) just to play and old NES game.
