the books don't teach you anything. Seriously. You're not going to become proficient in anything by reading and following diagrams. I suggest taking the time to check out studios within your area. Pick the one with the most trophies. They might not be all about humility and all that bullshit, but at least they win competitions, which means they are decent instructors and are putting out decent martial artists. Don't go for traditional studios...there's no point. Yeah, sure, people want to keep the purity of a style alive by teaching others...but practicality is not based on purity. Find a place that teaches elements from multiple styles.

I think you could learn basics from books, but you really need at least a hard bag and sparring gloves and target gloves as well then. But by no means could you be able to compete against a legit trained martial artist, but it would likely help out against local street thugs. Besides that though the health benefits are great, especially for weight loss. But remember no matter what tho, you can't learn physical toughness anywhere, you either have it or you don't.

But I would recommend the book Training for Warriors, it is a training guide for people wanting to get into MMA, but has not actual fighting techniques in it, but has a workout plan for 8 weeks, a diet plan, a a weight training plan and some injury prevention and healing techniques and workouts.

Yeah, something like this would be worthwhile, but most of the martial arts books I've seen try to teach someone how to defend from certain attacks....something you simply can't learn without having a partner to practice with. You also will have noone there to help fine tune your skills and tell you what to look for and when to react.
