Do any of you fellow RetroJunkies study martial arts? I'm currently a green belt in hakko ryu jiujitsu, a green belt in Tae Kwon Do, yellow sash in Shaolin kung fu, and have wrestled freestyle, greco roman, and folkstyle since I was 12. I also plan on taking private lesson in iaido(sword).

Very cool, has your dojo started to incorporate more grappling into the curriculum? When I was mainly studying TKD, we never went to the ground or clinched, which made it a bit difficult for me and my wrestling backgoround.

I earned my blue belt in Shorin-ryu Okinawa-te when I was in middle school, and earned my black belt in Tae Kwon Do in highschool.

I worked with 2 guys that collected ninja swords, and claimed to know sword fighting moves.
These guys were really skinny and pale. It was awesome.

I'm very interested in martial arts. Is it possible to learn fighting styles by studying books on your own.

Yes. Most martial arts classes train you more for competitions and exhibitions than for the practical use of martial arts. It REALLY helps to have someone to practice with, though, so you can actually test moves against another person. In Krav Maga training, they somtimes turn off the lights, play loud music, or turn on a strobe light to give it kind of a real world feel.

I have a person or two I could practice with. Can you suggest me some books? I used to have a real good one years ago when I was a kid,but don't remember what happened to it.

Well, you have the internet, and there are actually some pretty decent videos on YouTube that'll teach you the basics. I actually recommend that over a book, because you can see the moves in action. It depends on exactly what style of martial arts you're interested in, as every one is different.

I'm not to pickey as I like many of the ones I have seen, but I'd have to say kenpo looks cool to me the most. Know any good books about that?

I don't personally know of any good Kenpo books, so my advice would be to check out Amazon and see what they have.
