I'm pretty much the same. I have a television with basic cable. I'm going to miss watching The Travel Channel at night, but meh. We'll have two other televisions in the house that won't be affected by this change. My grandmother's TV has Digital Cable and my mother & father's television in the living room has Digital Cable.

Wow, I'm amazed at how many people have been completely misinformed about "the switch."

We won't have to throw our old TVs out. Yes, your cherished Zenith from the early 1970's will still work fine if you have cable, and if you don't, you'll just need the digital converter box, which is just a couple of bucks. You don't have to rush out and buy a new set.

O.k. guys, let me see if I can clear everything up. I work in this industry and I think I can sum everything up for ya'll. First off, If you have cable or sat, then your provider will supply any equipment that you might need for the digital conversion. Second,if you have a standard def analog t.v. and all you use is a terrestrial antenna to get your signal, then yes you will need a converter box. Right now I sell them for 59.99 apiece, but you can go to www.dtv2009.gov and you are able to get two coupons for 40.00 off the price of the box. Industry buzz is that the boxes will be free eventually. There is no need to buy a new t.v. unless you want one.
Are you ready for a report card????

I already brought a new TV last year since my old one (a Sanyo TV set from 1992) died out on me.

    Bump.

Now it's Canada's turn. Some stations have already switched, and the official transition date is set as August 31, 2011. Instead of all full power stations, as they did here, Canada made a list of "Mandatory Markets", essentially the big cities and capitals. I was able to watch some Canadian analog stations from Toronto, but I haven't seen any digital signals come through. A few stations are going to crank up the power on their digital stations after the transition, but I think 40 year old rabbit ears on a ceiling beam aren't going to cut it anymore.

More info on the transition and a list of mandatory markets

Not for me though. I used to get 4 Canadian channels reliably. Now I'm lucky to get 2, and one of them is French.
