I never had a Sega Master System - which I think was the first really cool console - but I did play my friend's one a lot. There were some good games that I have fond memories of.
But then the Sega Mega Drive (a.k.a. Sega Genesis) which was the finest gaming console for its time ever, as far as I am concerned. The Super NES ranted and raved about its wonderful 32,000 colours, but the Mega Drive had a CPU that was twice as fast, and with its 256 colours still looked better because of the more mature, sophisticated graphics. 32,000 colours is fine, but when you play a game like Mario with only a dozen cartoon colours, you're missing out on the extra grunt that the Mega Drive had.
And I still load up my Mega Drive to this day....
The games I still play are:
The Chaos Engine,
Biohazard Battle,
Streets of Rage,
Streets of Rage 2,
Street Fighter Special Edition (which apart from the poor sound quality is an arcade-perfect version of Street Fighter Championship Edition/Street Fighter Hyper Fight).
The games I don't play much but still like are:
Eternal Champions
Chakan
Alisia Dragoon
The games that I don't play any more are:
Mortal Kombat
Space Harrier 2
Altered Beast
Clay Fighters
Columns
Super Monaco Grand Prix 2
Rambo 3
The games I fondly remember playing but don't own (and maybe would not enjoy anymore) are:
Road Rash 1/2/3
Megalomania
General Chaos
Rolling Thunder 2
Raiden Trad
Batman
Battletoads
Super Off-Road
Shining Force 2
Mortal Kombat 2
Ramparts
Thunder Force 1/2/3/4
Wonder Boy 2 in Monster Land (not 100% sure of the name because there are two versions with nearly the same name)
Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's something (the one in which you became Mouse-Man, Piranha-Man, etc)
Dragon's Trap (I think that's the name - it was a pinball game with a heap of extra stuff).
Well, that's my list for now. I'm sure I'll think of more later. I love my Mega Drive, which was built to last. The number of times my cartridges have flown through the air, hit a wall and landed with a thud (I get really angry at some of those old games) and never had a problem is just amazing. And I have a second unit that I found in a bin that had been in the rain and weather for about a week; it works fine.
Anyhoo, those are my fond memories (some very recent) of my old-school computer game playing.
Of course before the Mega Drive was my old XT computer, on which more than a few hours of my life were sucked away by Moonbugs, then Hero's Quest, then all the SSR Dungeons and Dragons games (Pools of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Champions of Krynn, and to a lesser extent Hillsfar).
