I spent TWENTY friggen hours trying to get every secret in the first Super Mario Bros. game, like trying to find the Minus Zone.

I also spent hours and hours playing Counter-Strike on the PC.

What? Nobody else was addicted to The Sims? I lost way too many hours to that game.

Yikes, it took me months to finally get tired of The Sims. Until then, that's what I spent the majority of my weekends doing. I don't want to buy myself the new version or any of the expansion packs, because then it would start all over again!

I remember for the first few days after getting the game, I would keep on inadvertently thinking of myself in terms of those Need Bars. Like, "my bladder bar is reaching a critical point," or "my social bar is in dire need of improvement!"
Has this happened to anyone else?

Yeah, I know. I really screwed myself on this one, too. After starting this thread I basically went through all the classics and got addicted all over again - including the original Fallout, Diablo 2, and Sim City 2000 (what year is it again?). There's just something about a game with a choosable option to kill in the most disturbing way possible. Luckily, no new addictions yet.

Lately: Legends of Wrestling 2. There were so many wrestlers to play as that even though it wasn't one of the best wrestling games it still has a lot of replay value.

Others include Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, and X-Men Legends which I got hooked on and would play until like 2 in the morning because I wanted to see what the next level was like.

Yeah, I spent a good chunk of time on X-Men Legends, but luckily I didn't find the replay value extremely high since the game was made to be played with primarily the same 4 characters. Why start using a new character when you've just built up the ones you've had for 5 freakin' levels already? And Psylocke was just a throwaway (if I was a fan of hers, I'd have been pissed). Actually, I've played a few good RPG games like that where they killed their replay value by introducing new playable characters late in the game.

Breath of Fire 3 (so cutesy I couldn't bring myself to stop playing)
Hospital Tycoon (I think that's what it was called. Not quite sure though)
    Dungeon Master
    Resident Evil 2
    Suikoden 2
    Dylan Dog
Beatmania for the playstation sucked up a helluva lot of my time also. It was probably mostly due to the fact that it came with the turntable and keys.

(I'd better stop now or I might just remember all the games I have ever been addicted to and writing that list could quite well take up the rest of the night)

Okay, I know I can't be the only person to have played a game for 24 hours straight, looked around, and said "how the hell did that happen?". Next thing I know, I'm supposed to be at work in an hour and haven't slept for 36 hours. These aren't always my favorite games, they are just games I HAVE to keep playing by some unknown compulsion. Although I like a LOT of games, there have been a handful that I literally couldn't stop playing.

    My addictions have been:
    - Fallout (PC): addictive turn-based nuclear apocalypse RPG.
    - Escape Velocity (MAC): addictive space RPG - they made a sequel for PC and the cycle started all over again.
    - Ogre Battle (64): addictive fantasy RPG - I've heard the PS version is just as addictive.

What are yours? This could be therapeutic OR expose a bunch of addicts to a new drug. We'll find out.

boy are you ever a serious loser. The longest I stayed up to was 4 am on a weekend night with a friend playing nintendo world cup soccer...only stayed up that late because it was a social occasion. I'd never stay up that late if I was just playing on my own. As a kid I'd put a lot of money into street fighter 2. But when my spending would become a bit too much I'd just cut it out. Mario 3 was a bit of an addiction problem for me as a kid. So I literally sold my mario 3 and refused to play it again for many years because I didn't want to turn into a loser.

A lot of people use games like how people use drugs or food or other addictions to help them forget about their troubles. People like that make gamers look bad.
