I too thought Kurt was pretty cool.
Of all people, my church going, middle class, sober mom told me about Nirvana. She said "A lot of people try to sound dark and depressed, but these guys do it the right way." She had just finalized a pretty terrible divorce with my alcoholic father, so she was pretty drawn to that music. She now doesn't listen to rock music of any sort.
Anyways, I always thought he was this great innovator, and he was, but not to the degree that most people, at least I, thought. Turns out when he wrote "Smells Like Teen Spirit" he admited he was trying to write a song that sounded like a Pixies song. (For those that do not know, Ilikethepixies likes the pixies.) Furthermore, his whole career focused around blending together the sounds of two of his favorite bands: The Melvins and the Pixies. I'm not trying to discredit him, because he wrote some really great music.
I really like Bleach and Incesticide (Their B-sides and oddities collection) because it seems like he was a little bit more himself on these. Nevermind seems a bit... I don't know... shiny and polished. In Utero is just painful... just the death rattles of a man in insane depression. (I still love these albums).
