    It's icons like Grand Master Flash, Musical Youth, Gang Starr etc

    All of these made it into my LP collection. PE's a Nation Of Millions is just killer from front to back. So was that first NWA disc...straight outta compton ;)

    Today? Pfeh...I wouldn't touch anything HipHop. Its all just a bunch of irresponsible pricks showing how irresponsible they can be with money.
    Of course I feel the same way about the Paris Hiltons and Brittany Spears, and MTV's ridiculous show "Sweet sixteen"...talk about wanting to beat a bunch of spoiled kids with a stick. Sad, really damn sad.

    		 Definitely, back in those days I would switch music preferences each month. I can remember listening to Africa Bambattaa, Ice-T, DJ Quick, Easy-E, GMF, Digital Underground, Above The Law, NWA, PE, Tone-Loc, Run D.M.C, 2 Live Crew, Beastie Boys and hell, even Vanilla Ice. I don't care much for rap and hiphop anymore. But then again, 75% of today's mainstream "rock" is 100% pure shit. I'm [u]still[/u] wondering what the hell happened to Metallica.

    His job over the past 30 years has been to take hard-charging bands and turn them all into Journey. :shock:

    Did it with Van Halen, did it with Metallica...only with VH the jump wasn't as dramatic.

    I stopped liking Rap (I refuse to call it Hip Hop) in the early 90's when it all spilled over into mainstream and "exploded". Suddenly Rap was just all about hating......how much money I make, how many people I've killed, how many girls I've banged. It got old, fast. Today it amazes me how anyone can stand what its become.

    Today I find the music itself and the artists who bark out nearly indistinguishable from each other. Technically the same could be said of the many hair-bands that came out of LA in the late 1980's......the industry died because all the bands looked and sounded the same. I'm hoping the same happens to Hip Hop because its just bad, sooooo bad. Unlistenable bad.

    And its all the same crap all over again......I got money, I got cars, I got Hos and I don't care about any of it and I'll kill you at the drop of a hat.
    I've just summed up 75% of the hiphop records on sale today :)

    Give me the old school raps anyday....funky beats lyrics that made you think, not about how much bling I wear. Feh..even HipHop slang annoys me ;)

    what's really sad is that rap groups and artists that made it out of the 80's are'nt taken as serious anymore as are the ones that are coming out now. the old schoolers are more of a novelty act than anything. i mean who goes to a ice cube concert because they are hard core? you see mall rats at his shows now. and what about the beastie boys? you have the same group at a red hot chili peppers show. as far as im concerned rap is dead. and i hope it stays that way. :twisted:

    		 Well there's always someone who comes along and says "You're wrong, you're just listening to the wrong HipHop". And they may be right, so I figure 75% is a reasonable estimate :)

    What happened in the 1980's:
    The late 80's "metal" went from fringe, to everyone listening to it. Every hair band that claimed they were "metal" had a slow ballad and some cheezy choreographed dance moves on stage. They imploded.

    Hip Hop today:
    It went from fringe to everyone listening to it. HipHop is about slowjams and hard-core raps...with some dancy shit thrown in every now and then. I figure its only a matter of time before people get tired of everyoen trying to "out bad" and out bling each other.

    The only thing that fills me with dread is what will take its place. Historically, I think the next revolution means a return to the horrid "Singers and Songwriters" era of the mid 1970's =O

    		 Hmm Snow wasn't a rapper. I did like the 2 hits he had. I was never into rap that much but the groups I liked back in the day were Wrex n Effect, Dre and Snoop, Bone Thugs n Harmony, and Lost Boys.

    I agree that most of the creativity in rap music is pretty much spent. With the exception of 50 cent (personally not a fan!), Eminem, and Outkast (light/easy listening rap if you want to call it that..a lot of those rappers out now rap about the same thing and have the same image. There is nothing original about it. It's the same tired material about jewelry, clothes, cars, houses, girls shaking their asses, etc. There was definitely more substance and authenticity back in the day. A lot of it is just noise to me..don't get me started on that Crunk trend :roll:

    Oh yes, Bob rock was partly the reason why Metallica fell from grace for many hardcore fans...but you'd think the band members wouldn't let that twit end their killer discography line-up...unless perhaps they themselves agreed for change. Was it the lure of commercialized success? Eh, probably...still a damn shame. :roll:

    		 You know the truth is, a good band can't last forever.

    Either their style changes and they alienate their fans, or their style doesn't change and their fans get tired or bored with their music. One can only assume that Metallica wanted to change their sound, we gotta blame them.

    Metallica changed their sound and as a result quadrupled their audience from just longhairs and guys in ripped jean jackets, to every college fratboy in america who wanted to be "hard".

    on the other hand...AC/DC. Didn't really change their sound.....still has a huge following, but they've hardly released any memorable material in 20 years.

    Which is better...the aging dinosaur or the band that changes with the times?

    Metallica is actually a crime in more than one way. Their Black Album, and then Load and REloaded were just "weak album rock" to me, not even really metal...when Black Album came out I said "My God, they're turning into another Van Halen.....". I consider Van Halen a "generic rock band".
    Theyre ok, but they're not hard. Metallica was definately taking that place as Americas generic rock band.

    But Saint Anger.....that album sucks beyond words, and it does so in such a way as to make me feel they were trying to DELIBERATELY change their style to stay "hip". IE: "We gotta play harder, we gotta add a DJ who scratches to our music, etc".......it was just so wrong.

    I think Metallica should probably just disband and go away, and in 10 years do a "Masters Of Puppets" 30th anniversary tour or something :)

    		 well i think bob rock was a BIG influence in their change, but you have to remember also..cliff burton was an integral part of metallicas' writing process. when he died, they had nothing left to fill that void. although jason was a great contribution,he was'nt in the frame of mind cliff was in. the man was a musical genius, and i dont mean because he played well. i mean because he understood music, even so far as to teach hetfield music theory during tours. and practicing over 5 hours a day! i play guitar for about 20-45 min and start getting bored. so while they churned out ...and justice... that was the last you'd see of metallicas' trademark music tracks.never again did they write songs that were just music with out lyrical content. that was also a far stray from what they were.

    Oldskool hiphop, electro breakdance, Freestyle, oldskool funk,


    early - mid 90s:

    tupac, snoop, dre, ice cube, bone thugs, biggie smalls,
    eminem(slim shady LP)

    Now: Rap is whack, i dont like most of the stuff getting plaid on the radio especially Reggaton. Its sounds just like early classic house but not as good.

    Indie - electro - trip hop - and i'll listen to some underground, once in a while

    		 It's a shame how many poepl are puttin down rap (especially since a lot of people seem to not know it well at all)
    This year has been shit for rap, but last year there was enough jams. Even then, this year has still had some dope joints. The problem is mainstream rap. IT SUCKS. There are a couple nice jints but they are few and far between, and now it's all about beef (and it's all words too, these guys got 12 cops on them everytime they go get a latae from Starbucks)
    if you put in some effort to find good hip hop you will find it easily.
    Hell, 3 of the nicest albums that came out last year are from 'old school' type cats (Ghostface and Masta Killa, both Wu tang members, and Masta Ace)
    but hip hop is surely not dead, and I think it's still by far the best music to put a message across in.. the problem is mainstream guys don't got shit to say anymore. It's all an image and a slowed down tempo.
