Show Summary

Aired: 1991 - 1992
Show Type: Live Action
Country of Origin: US

It starred Connie Ray as Millicent Torkelson, who was a single mother with five children. The five children were Dorothy Jane, played by Olivia Burnette; Steven Floyd, played by Aaron Michael Metchik; Chuckie Lee, played by Lee Norris; Ruth Ann, played by Anna Slotky; and Mary Sue, played by Rachel Duncan.

As a single mother of five, Mrs. Millicent Torkelson is a do-it-yourselfer with a flair for finding ingenious ways to make ends meet. Her oldest daughter Dorothy is a sensitive dreamer who finds solace by talking to the "man in the moon". The rest of the clan includes Steven, Chuckie, Mary Sue and Ruth Ann, all of whom easily get themselves in and out of trouble. Making the best of bad times.

Living in Pyramid Corners, Oklahoma, Millicent did what she could to survive financially, after her husband, Randy (Gregg Henry) left the family. Randy later returned and was seen in several episodes, and the two parents ended up divorcing. The pilot episode deals with Millicent being so far in debt that she even has furniture in her home repossessed. In order to support her family, Millicent gets a boarder named Wesley Hodges (William Schallert) who ends up living with them for the year in the house basement. The pilot also involves 14 year old Dorothy Jane meeting for the first time the new neighbor, 18 year old Riley Roberts (Michael Landes), and becoming completely infatuated with him. Dorothy Jane is also quite embarrassed by her family, even though she would never let someone else make fun of them. The pilot also featured Ernie Lively as J.W., a butcher who is smitten with Millicent. In the pilot episode Benj Thall and Elizabeth Poyter played Steven Floyd and Ruth Ann Torkelson.

Lyrics:

The Torkelsons
The original theme song was sung by The Judds
People say God looks out for the working man

Sure hope he's looking out for me

These empty pockets need a helping hand

Kitchen tables full of family

But then the sun comes up (sun comes up)

And the moon is shining big and bright

And the new day promises (promises)

That everything will be alright

And the new day promises that everything will be alright.
