Aired: 1980 - 1992 Show Type: Live Action Country of Origin: US
"America's Top 10" was the television version of radio's "American Top 40," with both programs hosted by radio personality Casey Kasem. Like "AT40," "America's Top 10" announced back the top hits of the week on the various Billboard magazine charts. Kasem spotlighted one song from each of the three major charts with a music video: the Hot 100 (aka the mainstream "pop" chart), and the Hot Country Singles and Hot Soul/R&B Singles; in addition, the show culled an album track from one of the top 10 albums of the Billboard Top 200 albums chart.
Other segments included:
* Kasem answering a viewer's question, relating to the history of the Billboard charts (e.g., "What was the longest-running No. 1 single since the charts began?")
* An "update" or "special report" on a music performer, especially if they had been out of the spotlight, had recently died or were attempting a comeback; a current event/trend in music; or a news piece that had been reported on previously.
* "Should Have Been a Top 10 Hit," an occasional feature where Kasem spotlighted a song that fell short of the top 10 of the Hot 100 chart, but was noteworthy or otherwise deserved better popularity. When annoucing the song, Kasem would give the song's actual peak position.
Special programs were frequently aired, including an annual Christmas special.
Kasem hosted the show until 1991, when he was replaced by two short-term hosts, Siedah Garrett and Tommy Puett. Also in 1991, the Billboard chart was replaced by Radio and Records' charts (as Billboard's Hot 100 was undergoing a series of major changes at that time). Kasem returned briefly in the spring of 1992 when the show's run ended.
