Aired: 1976 - 1977 Show Type: Live Action Country of Origin: US
Host picks out some contestants from the studio audience.
The mc asks a nonsense question of the contestants that they
must answer(Query is really a corny joke.."Why is a husband like
a malfunctioning car?..Because they're both shiftless!")..if the contestants
can't answer the question correctly in a few seconds?
They must pay the consequences..meaning they have to participate
in a crazy stunt..in order to earn points and win prizes.
Oftimes?
The stunt has a little twist..The contestants usually do the stunt
but?
Unbeknownist to them..the host adds an extra situtation that
makes the stunt funny.
(EG trying to move a car from a construction site..but the
car is wrecked by an incompetant construction foreman)
Eventually, the prank is revealed and the contestants are
awarded prizes for their involvement.
"Truth Or Consequences!"was originally created for NBC Radio
in the 1940's by the series first host and producer..Mr.Ralph Edwards.
The show became a hit on radio and remained on the air...
until the series moved to NBC TV in 1948.
The program was even more successful on tv and it continued
on NBC TV into the 1950's.
Mr.Edwards continued to host the tv version of his series..
until he left the show in 1952 to mc the tv version of his popular radio
tribute show"This Is Your Life".
(Edwards would remained involved with "Truth Or Consequences"as
the show's executive producer)
Jack Bailey would mc the show for a time..but he
left to become the first host of ABC TV's"Queen For A Day"
in 1957.
Prior to Mr.Bailey's departure..Edwards was listening to
his car radio and he heard a local broadcaster host a local Los
Angeles,Cal. game show.
Impressed with this young gentleman's efforts.
He invited him to audition for the hosting spot on
"Truth or Consequences".
Bob Barker was hesitent in taking on the job of hosting
Mr.Edwards' show..because he was trying to get his own radio
game show onto tv.
When his local radio program failed to get onto tv..
however.
Mr.Barker accepted Mr.Edwards offer and in 1956..
he became the third and most popular host of the program.
Bob Barker's approach to hosting the show differed from
his predicessors.
Unlike Edwards or Bailey..He was not overbearing or
crude.
He treated the contestants like friends and he respected
their intelligence and feelings.
Yet?
Mr.Barker maintained a slightly impish sense of humor that
was fun and ever present.
Barker would host"Truth Or Consequences"on NBC TV into
the late 1960's.
When NBC dropped the show..Edwards moved it into national
syndication.
Barker continued to host the show..while he still mc'd
"The New Price Is Right"at CBS TV.
When the burden of hosting both shows got to be too
much for him.
Mr.Barker left"Truth Or Consequences!"in 1976 and he
was replaced by another host..Mr.Bob Hilton.
Hilton's version of the show was not as successful and
it left the air after one season.
Edwards tried to bring back"Truth Or Consequnces!"one
more time in national syndication in the late 1980's.
He hired former comedy magician Larry Anderson to
be the show's fourth mc and he added comic actors Ted
Ziegler and Jerry Maren to be show's comedy relief.
(Mr.Ziegler was also the show's new announcer)
The Larry Anderson version of the show was also
a failure(Mainly due to Anderson's total disrespect towards
the contestants) and the series was cancelled for good.
