Record of the Lodoss War is a fantasy anime OVA series based on a popular series of books in Japan called Replays (these books were transcripts of Dungeons & Dragons role-playing games sessions headed by Ryo Mizuno). These Replays would include other spin offs into regular novels, manga and various television series.

The story tells of the war torn land of Lodoss and a band of adventures fighting to end the constant threat to their island. The party of characters included: Parn (knight in training), Deedlit (a elf), Atoh (a cleric), a dwarf Ghim, Slayn (a powerful mage) and a thief named Woodchuck as they fight the forces from the island of Marmo. Marmo ,a neighboring island separated from Lodoss due to the war of the God’s many years ago, is filled with vile and evil creatures that are coming together to destroy the land of Lodoss. They are lead by the evil Emperor Beld, his lieutenant Lord Ashram and the female dark elf Pirotess. This is all overseen by the eyes of a being known as the "Scarlet Witch". The heroes must overcome these obstacles before them to save their beloved island from Beld, Ashram and the Scarlet Witch.

The first OVA series (released in 1990) consisted of 13 episodes.

In 1998 a 2nd Lodoss War series (entitled Record of the Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight) was made for television. This series was a remake/sequel to the original series. Episodes 1-8 of this new series retell the ending of the original OVA series and Episodes 9-27 we are introduced to a new cast of characters including newcomer called Spark, who looks up to Parn (now a Free Knight). However peace doesn’t stay on the isle of Lodoss for long, Ashram has returned seeking scepter of domination to re-unify Lodoss and also a new force arisen to the goddess of death and destruction.

The 2nd series also features a segment at the end of every episode called “Welcome to Lodoss Island” which was a super deformed series featuring the main characters in much more comedic and silly situations.

This series anime series lasted up to 27 episodes.
