It was dumped for the 90's talking pink panther cartoon series.

Never seen it. But it reminds me of that failed TV pilot from 1961, "Filbert", that was later shown in theaters and never seen again (until recently when it showed up on YouTube). Not only was the concept nearly similar, but the main characters in both pilots had the involvement of legendary Looney Tunes animator Friz Freleng.
