America's Funniest People

Show Summary

Aired: 1990 - 1994
Show Type: Live Action
Country of Origin: US

After the success of America's Funniest Home Videos was firmly established, Vin Di Bona Productions decided to create a new show with a different type of unusual, wacky, and strange video clips. The result was America's Funniest People, which premiered on ABC as a special in May, 1990. The ratings were good enough for a weekly show, and it became a regular series in September of the same year.

Comedian Dave Coulier, Bob Saget's co-star from the hit comedy Full House, was tapped as the host, and he introduced and commented on the various off-the-wall performances. One of the series' trademarks was a long-running gig about a fictitious animal, "the Jackalope," and Coulier provided the creature's voice.

The show had a prizing structure similar to AFV, with $10,000 awarded each week to the funniest video. Arlene Sorkin was the co-host from 1990-92. Actress Tawny Kitaen took over co-hosting duties from 92-94.

When I was in the 7th grade, my cousin and I auditioned for this show. We did a barnyard rap ( I know it sounds stupid!) He was a farmer and I was dressed in a cow costume. Some friends said the saw it on tv, we never did.

I never liked this show. I mean, AMHF was just a show about home movies that just happened to have funny moments in them, but this show was just about people purposely making idiots out of themselves. It was just plain dumb.
