Oggy and the Cockroaches

Show Summary

Aired: 1999 - 2000
Show Type: Animated
Country of Origin: US

The show centers on Oggy, a content and lazy, albeit very tender fat blue cat, who would usually spend his days watching TV and cooking - if it wasn't for the three pesky roaches in the household: Joey, Dee Dee and Marky (named after members of the punk group Ramones). The trio seems to enjoy generally making Oggy's life miserable, which involves mischieves ranging from (in most cases) plundering his fridge to such awkward things like hijacking the train Oggy just boarded.

The cartoon itself relies on slapstick humour, much like its "ancestor", Tom and Jerry, only amplifying the level of extremities up a notch; while "traditional" slapstick cartoon characters prefer dropping anvils and pianos on each other, this show sometimes uses even buses or submarines. Despite these however, most gags are easily accessible and enjoyable for younger viewers. There are no acceptable endings for the episodes — happy endings are never guaranteed.

Some might dismiss this show as a "Ren & Stimpy knockoff", and rightfully so with it's similar animation style, but I suppose it did have a charm all it's own, and in that sense should've deserved time to grow on toon buffs. But as with it's predecessor, "Space Goofs (both shows were distributed by Gaumont, btw), Fox only produced these shows as summer fill-ins while negotiating new distribution deals to restructure their SatAM line-up for the coming season and retitle it "The FoxBox".

Let me restate some things I mentioned above: turns out this series and "Space Goofs" were originally produced for French TV (thus the reason a French animation studio produced them). Fox only got the distribution rights to air both shows. It also turns out that Fox chose to air only a handful of the episodes. Since the show relied on outlandishly outrageous slapstick humor, most of the eps contained a subsequently excessive amount of gratuitous cartoon violence that just didn't pass the muster with the Fox censors.
If anyone is interested, you can see the entire series (largely uncensored, as it aired on French TV) @ www.dailymotion.com
