Big Blue Marble

Show Summary

Aired: 1973 - 1983
Show Type: Live Action
Country of Origin: GERMANY

The Big Blue Marble was a children's television program that forcused on the lives and children all over the world. In my opinion, it focused on the diversity and beauty of the many cultures in the world. Instead of featuring adults, it always explained from the view point of a child and used children as their focus; what they ate, played, schooled etc. One week you'd be presented with scenes from a Mexican child and the next it could be a Swiss child.

Its theme song is expecially memorable as it conjours up images of turning strangers into friends.

Theme Song:
"The earth’s a Big Blue Marble when you see it from out there.
The sun and moon declare our beauty’s very rare.

Folks are folks and kids are kids we share a common name.
We speak a different way but work and play the same.

We sing pretty much alike, enjoy Spring pretty much alike;
Peace and love we all understand and laughter, we use the very same brand.

Our differences, our problems from out there there’s not much trace
Our friendships they can place while looking at the face of the Big Blue Marble in space."

The ending of each episode showed children all over the world saying, "good-bye" in their own languages.

I loved this show. I watched it and had a pen pal. These types of shows need to be put into place again in order for this country and others to promote understanding of others and their cultrue.
