A classically trained actor, Varney began performing Shakespeare professionally at age 16, and subsequently dropped out of Lafayette High School his senior year. He performed at Virgina's Barter Theater in Abingdon, Virginia before landing roles on a number of short-lived variety shows throughout the 1970s. He was discovered by advertising agent John Cherry in the late 1970s after returning to Nashville to find work during the New York actors' strike, and starred in a long-running series of commercials featuring the Ernest P. Worrell character.
Varney went on to make eight feature-length films as "Ernest", win an Emmy for the childrens' program "Hey Vern, It's Ernest!", provide a number of voiceovers for cartoon films including "Toy Story" (1996) and "Annabelle's Wish" (1998), and star as Jed Clampett in "The Beverly Hillbillies" (1993).
A longtime smoker, Varney died of lung cancer at his home in White House, Tennessee at the age of 50.
