Paul Winchell was born on December 21, 1922 and died on June 24, 2005. He was a well known ventriloquist and inventor as well as voice actor. His most famous role was the original voice of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. Jim Cummings took over as Tigger in 1990 as well as Zummi Gummi on the Gummi Bears in 1989. But Paul's voice is truly one of a kind.
Born Paul Wilchen in NYC..Winchell was first introduced to
ventriloquisium via a mail order ad in a magazine.
After obtaining a dime from his brother in Law..he
studied the art of voice throwing and while a student
at NYC's Technical Arts School.
He designed and built his own vent figuire..inspired
by the talents of radio and movie ventriloquist:Edgar
Bergen.
Winchell performed a variation of Bergen's act for
his fellow teachers and students.
His talents soon came to the attention of his principal
..who got him an audition for "The Original Amature Hour"
(Then still hosted by the program's creator and mc:Major
Edward Bowes on The CBS Radio Network)
Winchell won the audition and he performed with the
series on radio and on the road in vaudeville theaters.
Until he left to try his luck as a nightclub entertainer.
He began performing in Hollywood,Cal.nightspots and
later began hosting his own comedy/variety series on WOR/
Mutual Radio in NYC in 1944.
"The Paul Winchell Radio Show's"airtime was brief..but?
It did pave the way for his move to the medium of tv.
From the late 1940's..he appeared on numerious tv variety
shows and eventually.
He hosted his own shows on NBC and later on ABC TV..
including:"The Paul Winchell/Jerry Mahoney Spiedel Show"
(Which featured a game show segment:"What's My Name?"),
"Winchell/Mahoney"(Winchell's first venture into kids tv),
"The Toyland Express","Circus Time","Popsicle Five Star Comedy"
(A weekly kids tv variety hour..that Winchell co-hosted with
cartoonist/storyteller:Bob Bean,Fellow ventriloquist:Senior
Wences and the comedy team of Ole' Olson and Chic Johnson).
He also hosted "The Paul Winchell Show"Sunday afternoons
on ABC TV from NYC's"Little Theater" and "Cartoonies!"Saturday
mornings on ABC TV.
When kids tv hosts were being dropped in favor of
cartoons and filmed shows for adults on the networks.
Winchell left NYC for other venues..he tried for
a movie career.
When he was hired to appear in "The Three Stooges"
compliation film"Stop,Look & Laugh"with "The Marquis Chimps"
and NYC based kids tv host/performer:"Officer Joe'Bolton
(Bolton was still hosting:"The Three Stooges Funhouse"on
WPIX TV Ch.11 in NYC at that time)in 1961.
The film was not a hit and Winchell was unable to
get other movie roles.
He moved to Hollywood,Cal. where he hosted his
own local kids tv shows..including"Winchell/Mahoney Time!"
(A 1960's version of his former NBC TV saturday kids
program).
In September of 1965"Winchell/Mahoney Time!"
was seen in national syndication and remained on the
air for four years.
He also did voice overs for many movie and tv cartoons
and for radio/tv commericals.
Winchell also did guest appearances on numerious tv
sitcoms and variety shows and he was a frequient guest
panelist on tv game shows.
In 1969..Paul Winchell briefly appeared on the kids tv
game show"The Storybook Squares"( a children's version of
the popular adult tv quiz series).
Working with his famous puppet pals..Winchell and"Jerry
Mahoney","Tessie Mahoney","Knucklehead Smiff" and Cedric"
and many famous performers would try to answer the queries
posed to them by the series host:"Sir Peter"Marshall in order
to help two kids earn points and win toy prizes.
The series was not successful and only lasted one season
on The NBC TV Network.
In September of 1972..Paul Winchell and his puppet pals
would host their last tv kids show..another kids tv game show
"Runaround"Saturday mornings on NBC.
This combination quiz/stunt show was also a failure
and only lasted one season.
After the cancellation of"Runaround"..Paul
Winchell never again appeared as an on camera
performer on tv.
For the rest of his career..he worked on
many scientific inventions,did voice overs for cartoons
and commercials and wrote his memiors and an updated
edition of his instructional 1950's book"Ventriloquisium For
Fun & Profit".
He also produced an instructional video on Ventriloquisum
as well.
