Don Murray

Biography

Best remembered for his wonderful, Oscar-nominated perfor- mance as the naive cowboy who romances Marilyn Monroe in Bus Stop (1956), Murray was no hick in real life. A graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, he was also a conscientious objector who refused to serve in the Korean War. After a solid start on Broadway, and the great success of Bus Stop he seemed headed for a long career as a leading man, in ma- jor films like A Hatful of Rain, The Bachelor Party (both 1957), and Shake Hands With the Devil (1959). But it turned out he was primarily interested in moviemaking as a form of community service; in 1961 he coproduced, cowrote (under the name of Don Deer), and starred inThe Hoodlum Priest the story of a priest's attempts to reform juvenile delinquents. He went on to play the Rev. Norman Vincent Peale in 1964's One Man's Way and in 1972 made his directorial debut with The Cross and the Switchblade another priests-anddelinquents tale, starring Pat Boone and Erik Estrada. In 1977 he directedDamien the story of the famous priest who treated lepers. Other acting credits, major and minor, include Advise and Consent (1962), Baby The Rain Must Fall (1965), Sweet Love, Bitter (1967), Happy Birthday, Wanda June (1971), Deadly Hero (1976), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Made in Heaven (1987) and Ghosts Can't Do It (1990), along with a two-year stint on the nighttime soap opera "Knots Landing" (1979-81). In 1961 he married actress Hope Lange; they divorced that same year.
