Released: 1977
The first of Italian director Dario Argento's "Three Mothers" series, "Suspiria" is considered to be Argento's magnum opus. Suzy Banyon, an American ballet student, arrives at a prestigious German dance school in the middle of a torrential downpour. As Suzy's taxi cab drives up to the school, a girl runs out, mentioning something about an iris. Later that night, the girl is gruesomely murdered after seeing a pair of glowing red eyes. At school the next day, Suzy meets two teachers and learns that she is to share a room with a girl named Olga. A day later, Suzy becomes very dizzy while dancing, and is moved to the school dorms and put on a diet of red wine. Later, hundreds of maggots fall from the ceiling, and the students and teachers are moved to the practice hall. Sara, another girl at the school, tells Suzy that the teachers leave the school promptly at 9:30 every night. As they sleep, as shodow on the teacher's side of the room lies in a bed with a distinct, raspy snore. The woman is said to be the directress, who was not supposed to arrive at the school for many weeks. The next day, the plind pianist's dog attacks a student, and Daniel, the pianist, is banned from the school. That night, Suzy listens as the teachers supposedly leave, but she realizes that their footsteps sre going away from the front door. Meanwhile, Daniel walks through a darkened piazza, where his dog goes mad and kills him. The next day, Suzy, troubled with the deaths, tells Madame Blanc, a teacher, about what the girl had said the night Suzy arrived, about the irises and a secret. Sara becomes angry that Suzy told Madame Blanc, and revelas that the was friends with the girl and had been taking notes about the strange things she said, but the notes disappeared. That night, Sara is murdered. Suzy talks to Sara's friend, a psychologist, who said that Sara left the school that morning because she was haunted by thoughts of a coven of witches. Upon returning to the school, Suzy finds that all the students have left and gone to the theatre. Suzy dumps out her food and wine, which looks suspiciously like blood, and suddenly all of the clues fall into place...
