A Clockwork Orange

Movie Summary

Released: 1971
Stomping, whomping, stealing, singing, tap-dancing,violating.Derby-toped teddy-boy hooligan Alex (Malcolm McDowell) has his own way of having a good time. He has it at the tragic expense of others.

Alex's journey from amoral punk to brainwashed proper citizen forms the dynamic arc of Stanley Kubrick's future-shock vision of Anthony Burgess' novel. Unforgettable images, startling musical counterpoints, the fascinating language used by Alex and his pals - Kubrick shapes them into a shattering whole. Hugely controversial when first released, A Clockwork Orange won the New York Film Critics Best Picture and Director honors and earned four Academy Award nominations*, including Best Picture. The power of its art is such that it still entices, shocks and holds us in its grasp.

Oh bliss! Bliss and heaven! Oh, it was gorgeousness and gorgeousity made flesh. It was like a bird of rarest spun heaven metal or like silvery wine flowing in a spaceship...gravity all nonsense now. As I slooshied, I knew such lovely pictures!!

Great movie but the book was a whole lot better. They have inspired a very successful piece of artwork of mine. My artwork has nothing on these two masterpieces though.

This movie made Stanley Kubrick very depressed. Kids in Great Britain saw this film and subsequently mimicked some of the violent crimes found within. Kubrick felt that this was his doing and fell into a deep depression as a result. Yay!
