Released: 1988 Dont be fooled by the poster shot of Sleepaway Camp 2; it actually has nothing to do with A Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th. Even with its tagline to support this contradiction, growing up I always thought this movie was some early version of Freddy vs. Jason, but that was before I familiarized myself with the entire Sleepaway Camp franchise. Writer Fritz Gordon and Director Michael A. Simpson dish out quite the paradox in this installment. Several years after the atrocities at Camp Arawak, a new consoler named Angela Johnson seems to be the only happy camper at Camp Rolling Hills. All the other campers experience angst and sorrow from her conservative, over-bearing rules. (Now, thats a badge honoring pop 80s attitudes if Ive even seen one.) She, however, plans to do something about itwith neighborly comfort and sweet little pep talks. But when the campers get a smidge out of control, Angelas uncontrollable addiction to kill begins to surface. Remind you of anybody? Within a matter of days, the camp is polished clean in a guise-Friday the 13th style, with the exception of one teen sweetie named Molly. Will Molly be able to cry some sense into Angelas checkered head, or will she become part of Camp Rolling Hills bloody history? In the 80s, it was typical for bad movies to spawn from their independent predecessors, just check out the Slumber Party Massacre series. Id lying if I didnt tell you that Sleepaway Camp shared a similar fate, but in terms of sticking to Angelas original character and original story, the filmmakers did a good job. Too bad Slumber Party Massacre didnt have such luck.
