They scared me too. When my grandmother was living near Chatham, she got Detroit stations and I happened to see the WXYZ wavy lines test - freaked me out
I too hated these tests. This is the old tone that I used to hear. I especially hated it when they did it over the car radio because my mother wouldn't turn it off. The EAS isn't as bad, but I really hate it when I'm trying to watch TV at 2 in the morning and five minutes into the program the screen goes gray and that annoying buzz sound starts up. Is that really necessary? What's wrong with the little black bar on the screen that they do during the day?
