1992 in Review By: the-micro-man
Article Score: -2

After 1991, at least in the United States and the once-Soviet Union, a new era of peace had begun. The Cold War ended, and the 1990s became a very laid-back decade.

Politics in 1992

Many soviet states become independent countries in this year, and 1992 is the final year of George Bush Sr.'s presidency. The Church of England allows women to become preists. The 27th Amendment to the United States Constitution is passed.

Music in 1992

In 1992, the conversion process was going at full-speed. Glam Metal was now "un-cool", and those who were still fans of the genre would get made fun of at school. Now, it was all about Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and other grunge bands. Alice in Chains releases "Dirt", and the Beastie Boys release "Check Your Head". The terrible country singer, Billy Ray Cyrus, also acheives fame with his song, "Achy Brakey Heart". Rage Against the Machine, a rap-metal band, becomes popular, and they are famous for their socialist anti-big-government message. In this year, Kurt Cobain (lead singer of Nirvana) marries the controversial Courtney Love.

Ace of Base
Alice in Chains
Areosmith
The Beastie Boys
Bell Biv DeVoe
C+C Music Factory
Dr. Dre
Guns N' Roses
Kriss Kross
Madonna
M.C. Hammer
Metallica
Michael Jackson
New Kids on the Block
Nirvana
Pearl Jam
Rage Against the Machine
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Soundgarden
Tupac Shakur
White Zombie
Whitney Houston
ZZT Top

As you can see, some pop music was still cool, but grunge would completely take over in the next year or two.

Cartoon Network, the first mainstream television station to air nothing but cartoons is launched in 1992, and the Sci-Fi Channel is also launched. The infamous "Barney and Friends" debuts, as "Tiny Toons" goes off the air. Darker animated shows such as "Bat-Man: The Animated Series" hit airwaves. "The Cosby Show" was cancelled this year. Video Games in 1992

The console wars begin to rage on in 1992. The NES begins to lose popularity, and the 16-bit consoles are in the heat of their battle. The competing companies make CD-ROM gaming mainstream by releasing a new wave of CD-based consoles and console add-ons, such as the TurboDuo and the SEGA-CD. SEGA releases a high-tech new racing game, "Virtua Racing" in 1992, which utilizes the then-state-of-the-art polygon techniques. "Wolfenstein-3D" revolutionizes 3D gaming on home computers. Popular video games such as "Mortal Kombat" and "Night Trap" stir up a rediculous amount of controversy which eventually leads to the creation of ESRB in 1994. Wario debuts in "Super Mario Land 2".

Alone in the Dark
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Ah yes, 1992. Another good year. My memories go back as far as this year, but I still wish I could remember a lot more than that. Great article!

There's another inaccuracy in your article: you state that Tiny Toon Adventures left the airwaves in 1992, but this is far from the truth. Tiny Toon Adventures did air in syndication from 1990 to September of 1992, but afterwards, moved exclusively to the Fox Kids Network almost immediately. New episodes of the show premiered in the fall of 1992, along with episodes of the Plucky Duck Show. Tiny Toons would air on Fox Kids until the summer of 1995. It then left airwaves until 1997 when repeats reaired as part of the Kids' WB lineup.

Nope, NKOTB did not break up in '91. They broke up in `94. In fact they released an album that year, which didn't reach any success, and later on they disbanded.

Wow, I wasn't even aware that a Constitutional amendment had been passed in 1992. I don't mean to nitpick, but "they are famous for their socialist anti-big-government message" seems like kind of an oxymoron. "Socialist" implies big government with lots of spending on social programs, whereas "anti-big-government" implies just the opposite. Otherwise, it's a fine article.
