I have been wracking my brains for 2 years, trying to remeber the name of this show! I loved it so very much it really was one of my great child hood memories, but i had forgotten the name, Thank you retrojunk! anyone know where I can get a copy of the dvds?

I love the opening and closing themes for the Iscandar saga.

Man i'm old. My brother and I would watch this show every day at 6 a.m. and now i only have a few viewable episodes on vhs. Sad, sad, panda

Is Desslok (or Desslar, if you are a purist) not the coolest villian ever?

Much less "squelched" than Battle of the Planets, this show was the number 1 show on it's time, nothing else even compared to it for me, and I was only 10 at the time.
American animators have consistently suffered from "oversimplification" of animation, fearing the intelligence of the youth is too low to comprehend the depth of Japanese storytelling, and they constantly use a narator to "fill in the gaps" so our soft-headed American youth won't be confused. I think they insulted our intelligence.
It's insulting some of the garbage that American producers air, and expect to entertain kids with mindless drivel.
Star Blazers was the closest we could get to real cartoons in it's day, and I for one am glad to have been a part of it.

Thankfully, I can say that a handfull of American animators figured it out during the 80's and began to produce decent productions, and today provide much more intelligent cartoons than we suffered with in the 70's.

I would like to see this series re-aired for sure. And I'd buy a complete DVD set of these, if they provided both Original Japanese version, and American "butchered" version so I can compare the 2.

This was a great show when I was growing up. I would painfully sit through the ending of The 700 Club, watch Star Blazers, and then run to get to school on time.
Basso says it's a lot like Dragon Ball GT. I've seen Dragon Ball and handful of times and on the surface they aren't the same but if you really look at all anime since Speed Racer, has it really changed much? The eyes are still really big and round, there are plenty of reaction gasps, and you can always depend on the a-typical character personalities. Let's face it, anime has a formula with a history and the only thing that has really changed over time is that the characters got better stylists. What is with the over-coifed hair, guys?
Sure, it's cheezy, but I've seen Star blazers recently and comparing it to the other anime offerings, it's much less "over the top".
The great thing about anime in the 80's was that it was refreshing. Before it Hanna Barbara offered the same-ol' same ol'. In fact, what they offered around that time could only be considered classic in someone's memories. They were cookie cutter copies of about 4 really good shows they produced. There was the gang of mystery solvers, the buddy team, some k-razy animals, and then the action show where only the characters toes got shot off. In Star Blazers, people died and not just the red shirts, but main characters.
I think if they would re-air this show, it could be a big hit but this time, play the third season (Bolar Wars) which never aired in the US.
