Prisoner
Debut: January 01, 1979
Ended: January 01, 1986

This Australian soap was set in the Wentworth Detention Centre, a women's prison. It reloved around the lives of both the officers and inmates. Stalwart through the entire series was officer Meg Jackson/Morris. Meg herself was born in neighbouring Barnhurst prison and was very smypathetic to the inmates and tried endlessly to help rehabilitate them, despite one of them stabbing her first husband (Bill Jackson) to death in the early episodes. This soap-opera styled drama touched on all manner of subjects such as drug use, lesbianism, riots, escapes, murders, and the problems facing inmates, staff and their families both inside and outside prison. For the first part of the show control of Wentworth was given to Governer Erica Davidson, she would later be replaced by Ann Reynolds. The show ran for 692 episodes on Australia's Network Ten between 1979 and 1986. The series has been screened in the UK on ITV and Channel 5, one episode was even broadcast on Channel 4 as part of Australia night in the late 90's.
