KYW-TV Newscasts
Debut: September 01, 1941

KYW-TV in Philadelphia broadcasts 32 hours of locally produced newscasts every week (with 5 hours on weekdays, 3 hours on Saturdays, and 4 hours on Sundays), with news, weather, traffic and sports. In the early days, Channel 3's news department had it's early newscasts like Philco News, way before 1965, and Vince Leonard began his long run as news anchor (until he left in 1980. In 1965, news director Al Primo popularized the Eyewitness News format and branding. Also during that time, future talk show host Tom Snyder and Marciarose Shestack. Also in the 1960s, the team had personalities including Malcolm Poindexter joined the team as a reporter (until he retired from the station in 2001). For most of the 1970s, Channel 3 trading first place with WFIL-TV/WPVI-TV Channel 6. In 1972, the news department hired Philadelphia native Jessica Savitch as a report, and later co-anchor alongside Vice Leonard. Mort Crim also joined in that period of time. However, in 1977, KYW-TV was beaten by WPVI-TV in most timeslots by a wide margin during a sweeps period, when Jessica Savitch left the team to join NBC News, and Mort Crim left the station by joining WDIV-TV in Detroit. In 1979, the station adopting a new format called "Direct Connection. In the 1980s, Eyewitness News had personalities including Maria Shriver, Maury Povich, Jack Jones, Mike Shannon, Walt Hunter, Pat Ciarrocchi, Jerry Penacoli, Mark Haines, Diane Allen, Steve Bell, Jackie Hays and Ukee Washington. In 1991, the station rebranded as KYW-3, and Eyewitness News was rebranded, by giving its newscasts a different name, Newsday, Newsbeat, and The News Tonight. In 1994, just before it became a CBS station, calling its newscasts KYW News 3. In early 1998, the Eyewitness News name was restored. In 2003, the station rebranded as CBS 3 Eyewitness News. In April 2007, KYW-TV was the third Philly station to broadcast its newscasts in high-definition. On February 17, 2023, the station rebranded its newscast name: from "CBS 3 Eyewitness News" to "CBS News Philadelphia". On April 12, 2023, CBS News Philadelphia became the full-time branding for KYW-TV's news operation, coinciding with a shift to a more community-based focus, featuring more in-depth reporting, by debuting a new look, this time a new green version of the CBS Stations' graphics package, in part as a nod to the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles.
