The story focuses on a disillusioned, death-obsessed pencil-pusher whose only apparent social stimulus comes from attending cancer support-group meetings. His dreary existence takes a decided turn for the anarchic when he meets an amoral and enigmatic guru named Tyler Durden, with whom he develops a secret society of "fight clubs," where young men catch the ultimate adrenaline rush by beating the tar out of one another.
