Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Release: May 25, 1977

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, an Empire controls the inhabitants of hundreds of worlds with an iron fist. Fighting for freedom from the Empire's suffocating hold on the galaxy, a rebellion aided by Princess Leia (Fisher) makes their way back to base when they are boarded by an Imperial Star Destroyer. Before being captured by the Dark Lord Darth Vader (Prowse/Jones), Leia sends a message for help with a couple of droids to the planet below. Shortly after arriving on the planet Tatooine, the two droids, R2-D2 (Baker) and C-3PO (Daniels), are purchased by a moisture farmer, and cared for by his nephew, Luke Skywalker (Hamill). When R2-D2 escapes to search for a Jedi Knight by the name of Obi-Wan Kenobi (Guinness), Luke and C-3PO go after him. After finding both the droid and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke is offered the chance to become a Jedi and fight with the rebellion, but decides to return home. But Luke finds his loved ones murdered by Imperial stormtroopers, and, vowing revenge, he agrees to accompany Obi-Wan to aid the Rebellion. With the help of two smugglers, Han Solo (Ford) and Chewbacca (Mayhew) and their spacecraft, the Millennium Falcon, Luke, Obi-Wan and the two droids set off. But when they arrive at their destination, they discover that not only will they have to change their plans, they will have to deal with Darth Vader and the Empire's deadliest weapon, the Death Star, alone.

Quotes
Obi-Wan Kenobi: "So tell me, Luke... do you know about your father's service in the Clone Wars?"
Luke Skywalker: "No, my father didn't fight in the wars. He was a navigator on a spice freighter."
Obi-Wan Kenobi: "That's what your uncle told you. He didn't hold with your father's ideals; he felt he should've stayed here and not gotten involved."
Luke Skywalker: "You fought in the Clone Wars?"
Obi-Wan Kenobi: "Yes. I was once a Jedi Knight, the same as your father."
Luke Skywalker: "I wish I'd known him."
Obi-Wan Kenobi: "He was the best star pilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior. I understand you've become quite a good pilot yourself. And he was a good friend."
Owen Lars: "Luke! (referring to C-3PO and R5-D4) Take these two over to the garage, will you? I want them cleaned up before dinner."
Luke Skywalker: "But I was gonna go to Tosche Station to pick up some power converters!"
Owen Lars: "You can waste time with your friends when your chores are done. Now, come on, get to it."
General Tagge: "And until this battle station is fully operational, we are vulnerable. The Rebel Alliance is too well equipped. They're more dangerous than you realize!"
Admiral Motti: "Dangerous to your starfleet, Commander. Not to this battle station."
General Tagge: "The Rebellion will continue to gain a support in the Imperial Senate, until..."
Grand Moff Tarkin: "(walking in with Darth Vader) The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I have just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away."
General Tagge: "That's impossible! How will the Emperor maintain control without the bureaucracy?"
Grand Moff Tarkin: "The regional governors now have direct control over their territories. Fear will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station."
General Tagge: "And what of the Rebellion? If the Rebels have obtained a complete technical readout of this station, it is possible — however unlikely — that they might find a weakness and exploit it."
Darth Vader: "The plans you refer to will soon be back in our hands."
Admiral Motti: "Any attack made by the Rebels against this station would be a useless gesture, no matter what technical data they've obtained. This station is now the ultimate power in the universe! I suggest we use it."
Darth Vader: "Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to destroy a planet, or even a whole system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force."
Admiral Motti: "Don't try to frighten us with your sorcerer's ways, Lord Vader. (Vader walks toward Motti, then slowly raises his hand) Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes or given you clairvoyance enough to find the Rebels' hidden fortr–– (grasps his throat as if he is being choked)"
Darth Vader: "I find your lack of faith disturbing."
Grand Moff Tarkin: "Enough of this. Vader, release him!"
Darth Vader: "As you wish. (drops his hand and Motti's head hits the table as he regains his breath)"
Grand Moff Tarkin: "This bickering is pointless. Lord Vader will provide us with the location of the Rebel fortress by the time this station is operational. We will then crush the Rebellion with one swift strike."
Darth Vader: "Obi-Wan is here. The Force is with him."
Grand Moff Tarkin: "If you're right, he must not be allowed to escape!"
Darth Vader: "Escape is not his plan. I must face him alone."
Darth Vader: "He is here."
Grand Moff Tarkin: "Obi-Wan Kenobi? What makes you think so?"
Darth Vader: "A tremor in the Force. The last time I felt it was in the presence of my old master."
Grand Moff Tarkin: "Surely he must be dead by now."
Darth Vader: "Don't underestimate the Force."
Grand Moff Tarkin: "The Jedi are extinct. Their fire has gone out of the universe. You, my friend, are all that's left of their religion."
Owen Lars: "(referring to Obi-Wan Kenobi) That wizard's just a crazy old man. You stay away from him, you hear me? He's dangerous. Now, tomorrow I want you to take that R2 unit to Anchorhead and have its memory erased. That'll be the end of it. It belongs to us now."
Luke Skywalker: "But what if this Obi-Wan comes here looking for him?"
Owen Lars: "He won't. I don't think he exists anymore. He died about the same time as your father."
Han Solo: "(after sliding down the garbage chute) That garbage chute was a really wonderful idea! What an incredible smell you've discovered!"
Princess Leia Organa: "Into the garbage chute, flyboy!"
Luke Skywalker: "So... you got your reward and you're just leaving, then?"
Han Solo: "That's right, yeah. I have some old debts I gotta pay off with this stuff. Even if I didn't, you don't think I'd be a fool long enough to stick around here, do you? Why don't you come with us? You're pretty good in a fight. We can use you."
Luke Skywalker: "Come on! Why don't you take a look around? You know what's about to happen, what they're up against. They could use a good pilot like you, and you're turning your back on them!"
Han Solo: "Well, what good is a reward if you ain't around to use it? Besides, attacking that battle station ain't my idea of courage. It's more like... suicide."
Luke Skywalker: "All right. Well, take care of yourself, Han. I guess that's just what you're best at, isn't it? (starts to walk away)"
Han Solo: "Hey, Luke. (Luke turns around and faces Han) May the Force be with you."
Obi-Wan Kenobi: "Obi-Wan Kenobi. Obi-Wan... Now, that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time."
Luke Skywalker: "I think my uncle knows him. He said he was dead."
Obi-Wan Kenobi: "Oh, he's not dead. Or...not yet."
Luke Skywalker: "Then you know him."
Obi-Wan Kenobi: "Well, of course I know him! He's me. I haven't gone by the name of Obi-Wan since...oh, before you were born."
Luke Skywalker: "(examines the object given to him by Obi-Wan Kenobi) What is it?"
Obi-Wan Kenobi: "It's your father's lightsaber. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster. (Luke activates the lightsaber) But an elegant weapon for a more... civilized age. For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times... before the Empire. (Luke deactivates the weapon)"
Luke Skywalker: "How did my father die?"
Obi-Wan Kenobi: "A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father. Now the Jedi are all but extinct. Vader was seduced by the dark side of the Force."
Luke Skywalker: "The Force?"
Obi-Wan Kenobi: "Well, the Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It is an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together."
Darth Vader: "I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan. We meet again, at last. The circle is now complete. When I left you, I was but a learner. Now I am the Master."
Obi-Wan Kenobi: "Only a master of evil, Darth."
Princess Leia Organa: "Governor Tarkin. I should have expected to find you holding Vader's leash. I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board."
Grand Moff Tarkin: "Charming to the last. You don't know how hard I found it, signing the order to terminate your life."
Princess Leia Organa: "(sarcastically) I'm surprised you had the courage to take the responsibility yourself."
Grand Moff Tarkin: "Princess Leia, before your execution, I would like you to be my guest at a ceremony that will make this battle station operational. No star system will dare oppose the Emperor now."
Princess Leia Organa: "The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."
Grand Moff Tarkin: "Not after we demonstrate the power of this station. In a way, you have determined the choice of the planet that will be destroyed first. Since you are reluctant to provide us with the location of the Rebel base, I have chosen to test this station's destructive power on your home planet of Alderaan."
Princess Leia Organa: "(shocked) No! Alderaan is peaceful. We have no weapons. You can't possibly...!"
Grand Moff Tarkin: "You would prefer another target? A military target? Then name the system! (stepping closer to Leia and pinning her against Darth Vader) I grow tired of asking this, so it will be the last time. Where is the Rebel base?"
Princess Leia Organa: "(looks at Alderaan for a moment, then, resigned) Dantooine. They're on Dantooine."
Grand Moff Tarkin: "There. You see, Lord Vader? She can be reasonable. (to assistant) Continue with the operation. You may fire when ready."
Princess Leia Organa: "(panicked) What?!"
Grand Moff Tarkin: "You are far too trusting. Dantooine is too remote to make an effective demonstration, but don't worry. We will deal with your Rebel friends soon enough."
Princess Leia Organa: "Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?"
Luke Skywalker: "(disguised as an Imperial stormtrooper) Huh? Oh, the uniform! (takes off his helmet) I'm Luke Skywalker. I'm here to rescue you."
Princess Leia Organa: "You're who?"
Luke Skywalker: "I said I'm here to rescue you. I've got your R2 unit and I'm here with Ben Kenobi."
Princess Leia Organa: "Ben Kenobi? Where is he?"
Luke Skywalker: "Come on!"
Han Solo: "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid."
Luke Skywalker: "You don't believe in the Force, do you?"
Han Solo: "Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other. I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen anything to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything. There's no mystical energy field that controls my destiny. Anyway, it's all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense."
General Dodonna: "The battle station is heavily shielded and carries a firepower greater than half the star fleet. Its defenses are designed around a direct large scale assault. A small one-man fighter should be able to penetrate the outer defense."
Rebel officer: "Pardon me for asking, sir, but what good are snub fighters going to be against that?"
General Dodonna: "Well, the Empire doesn't consider a small one-man fighter to be any threat... or they'd have a tighter defense. An analysis of the plans, provided by Princess Leia, has demonstrated a weakness in the battle station. But the approach will not be easy. You're required to maneuver straight down this trench and skim the surface to this point. The target area is only two meters wide. It's a small thermal exhaust port right below the main port. The shaft leads directly to the reactor system. A precise"
Wedge Antilles: "That's impossible! Even for a computer."
Luke Skywalker: "It's not impossible. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home; They're not much bigger than two meters."
General Dodonna: "Then man your ships, and may the Force be with you."
Gold Leader: "It's no good! I can't maneuver!"
Gold Five: "Stay on target!"
Gold Leader: "We're too close!"
Gold Five: "Stay on target!"
Gold Leader: "Loosen up!"
Obi-Wan Kenobi: "Mos Eisley Spaceport. You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious."
