YO! MTV Raps
Debut: December 15, 1988
Ended: December 15, 1995

From 1981 to 1987 MTV was slow to pick up on Hip-Hop, but in 1988 it finally did with YO! MTV Raps. This hyped up series produced this lively mix of non stop hip-hop videos, interviews with up and coming rap stars, live in studio performances (on Fridays) and crazy comedy. YO! Originally aired on both Saturday Mornings and Saturday Nights, but as YO!'s popularity grew, it was expanded to six days a week, lead by 4 funkyfresh new MTV VJ's. Former Queensbridge's high school security guard Ed Lover. WBAU's alums and founding members of Def Jam's Original Concept posse DJ Doctor Dre and T-Money hosting the weekday show "YO! MTV Raps Today". And Frederick "Fab 5 Freddy" Brathwaite hosted "YO! MTV Raps" on Saturdays or as Doctor Dre calls it "Saturdayo!". In 1995 the series was renamed as YO! but it wasn't the same. But Hip-Hop is alive and well, and it could be thanks to 1 little show, YO! MTV RAPS!
