Winx Club is an animated series produced by Rainbow SpA and Nickelodeon, which are both part of Viacom. It was created by Iginio Straffi. The show is about Bloom, a 16-year-old girl from Earth, who discovers she has magical abilities. In the series opener, she saves Stella, a 17-year-old fairy princess from Solaria. Stella persuades Bloom to enroll in Alfea College, a school for fairies in the Magical Dimension. There, she meets roommate Flora and apartment mates Tecna and Musa; together they form the "Winx Club". When he outlined the show's plot, Iginio Straffi intended for the third season to be the last. He eventually gave into the show's popularity, and a fourth season was greenlit in 2008. Around this time, the American company Viacom (owner of Nickelodeon) started talks to become a co-owner of Winx Club's animation studio (Rainbow SpA). In 2010, it was announced that Viacom would finance and launch a revival of the show, now produced with their Nickelodeon studio and beginning with a retelling of the first two seasons. The Viacom revival consists of three new seasons (Seasons 5 through 7), all aired on Nickelodeon channels internationally. They were animated mainly using Flash animation, unlike the previous hand-drawn series. Iginio Straffi was less involved with the revived show than the earlier episodes; he instead decided to focus on other projects, like the live-action show Club 57, which was again co-produced with Nickelodeon.
