The Academy Awards, also known as The Oscars, are a set of 24 awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry, given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Academy Awards ceremony televised for the first in 1953 on NBC up until 1960. Then in 1961, ABC took over until 1970, when NBC retained its rights for 5 years (1971-1975). In 1976, ABC retained its rights, and it has been every year, ever since.
