Felix the Cat
Debut: December 15, 1958

Felix the Cat began life in the silent film era in series of surreal cartoons however with the invention of sound the cartoons slowly began to loose popularity. With cartoon from studios from Disney, Warner Bros. and the Fleischer Studios Felix found too much competition even with entering in the world of sound and color for a brief time. Through the years Felix has had many television revivals. in 1958 a new television series, this cartoon introduced Felix having a Magic Bag in which it could transform into anything that Felix wanted. Many of the episodes revolved around villains attempting to capture Felix's bag with unsuccessful results. These new villains included The Professor, his nephew Poindexter, and Master Cylinder. The series lasted over 126 episodes on ABC. From 1966-1969, new theatrical shorts were produced, but only 24 were produced. Through the 80's a full length motion picture film was made. It was released in 1992. In 1995 a new cartoon entitled, The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat, went book to the roots of the early silent era shorts having a surreal visuals and designs unlike the 50's cartoon, 60s theatrical shorts or the feature film. However the Magic Bag and Poindexter still remained apart of this new series. While the show only lasted two seasons on CBS, many fans consider this one of the best series of Felix cartoons. In 2000 a Japanese children anime series entitled Baby Felix was released. This involved an infant version of Felix being raised by Felix the Cat. This series only lasted one season. The show followed other similar programs of having younger versions of popular cartoon characters ( Muppet Babies, Baby Looney Tunes, Pink Panther and Sons, and so forth) but many fan were pleased it only lasted 26 episodes. While Felix has had his ups and downs he has still managed to capture the hearts of animation fans for years and still has merchandise produced. Even now Felix is rumored to have a new series in works for Cartoon Network.
