PSP's are good for a few things.
Portable movie player: The screen is small and the sound can suck, but you can download or rip movies and shows and watch Jem and the Holograms at the office.
Beaten out by: Portable DVD player that plays AVI files.
Wireless internet access: Much better than the DS for playing over the internet. You can actually play games with opponents from all over, bot just people you have spoken to and gotten a code from and have set up an online meeting time. Man was I disappointed with the DS for that crap. I got Animal Crossing and never bought another multiplayer game for it again.
Beaten out by: Laptop Computer
ROMmage: You can play all sorts of your favorite games from the past on the PSP. There are all sorts of emulators out there that work great. The Ds can use emulators as well, but they are a huge pain to get in and set up. There is always the GBA flash cards, but then you could just use the GBA instead. You get a better range of emulators for the PSP.
Beaten out by: Nothing. There will be the Nintendo Revoluition (I will not call it the Wii. It had a great name and then they changed it to something nowhere near as catchy." but you will have to pay for those games, and there will only be certain games available. You can also play ROMS on a laptop, but you can't stick the laptop in your pocket, plus it's nicer to have video game controls instead of a keybard to play games. (Yes there are USB controllers but that's more stuff to carry around, thus it still does not beat the PSP.)
UMD movies aren't even an incentive to me, just get the DVD, rip it and play the ripped file on the PSP. Then you get the movie for your PSP and you get to play the movie on your DVD player. UMD movies would have been a great idea if they had pricemarked them at $5 or so.
My reccomendation is to go on Ebay and get a used PSP. They can do some neat things but they are still not worth the $200 they are at now.
