A little history helps here. Tengen was a wholly-owned subdivision of Atari. Although Atari is (or was, rather) an American company, they took their name from Japanese. In the Japanese language, "atari" is a state in the game Go similar to the state of "check" in Chess. "Tengen" is the Japanese name for the center position on the Go board. Given this history, it's safe to asume that "Tengen", like "Atari", is a Japanese word. The letter "G" in Romanized spellings of Japanese words is always a hard "G" sound, as in "girl", "grape", or "goat". There you go |
