My history teacher told me about this a couple years back. He explained that there was an unaired episode of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood that involved camping. In one scene, Mr. Rogers begins setting up the tent and explains that "it's so easy a kid could do it". He couldn't get it set up properly and he started cursing.

Did this really happen? Can this episode be seen anywhere on the internet?

Whoa, I never heard of that! It's hard to believe curses coming out of Mr. Rogers' mouth, but I don't know, maybe it happened. Haven't seen anything like that on the internet though.
"Ease on down, Ease on down the road
come on, Ease on down, Ease on down the road
don't you carry nothing that might be a load come on, Ease on down Ease on down, down the road"

That's a new one on me, but rumors of this sort have popped up about Mr. Rogers many times over the years, and they've always been proven false in the past. Perhaps the telling thing about this particular rumor is the detail that the episode was supposedly unaired. This detail is supiciously convenient, becuase it removes the requirement for there to be a known episode involving Fred Rogers going camping. It's also just plain suspicious, because in a pre-recorded TV show such as Mister Roger's Neighborhood, the blooper would simply have been cut from the episode, and the episode would have been broadcast without it, not shelved or destroyed.

I've also heard this rumor, but that was many years ago. I've yet to see proof of this.

I don't believe this myself. It sounds very much like the "Barney got shot" rumor and the rumor that "Steve from Blue's Clues died." So, let's break this down. (This could take a while.)

After a search for bloopers of the show, I came up with nothing. Not even Mr. Rogers swearing. That's the first sign. Such a big thing would have shown up somewhere on the net, or an angry parent's blog.

            But here's one person's account of it (a-la jumptheshark.com):

"When I got older, it was quite amusing to see Fred Rogers, in a clip of out-takes from one of those Bloopers shows, swearing like a truck driver because he couldn't get a tee-pee like tent up...The thing kept collapsing on him, and he was bleeped out sever times. Unfortunately, that episode never aired."

Sounds highly suspect to me. Like it was said, the episode is mysteriously unaired. I did a word search on the episode guide, there's no mention of tee-pee building or even mention of native american homes, but I did find an episode where someone ELSE came in to demonstrate how to build a camping tent.

I also found this quote on jumptheshark:

"Mr. Rogers gets really angry while trying to set up a pup tent in a wind storm, causing him to throw down the poles and yell "We'll just wait for Handyman Negri to do it!" Lesson learned: getting angry is ok, as is shucking your work onto Handyman Negri. The follow up episode where Mr. Rogers shows the film of the tent incident on picture-picture and talks about how it's okay to be angry."

Okay, that just sounds like BS to me. But I searched for episodes that Joe Negri guest stared in and found this episode:

            "Windstorm in Bubbleland (1980)

The day of the Neighborhood Opera "Windstorm in Bubbleland" finally arrives..."

This coincides with the episode guide descriptions- They were performing an opera using camping equipment as props, which explains why Mr. Rogers had camping equipment in the wind.

So, it appears this episode MAY exist, but if this is true, it means that the "anger" was intentional, and Mr. Rogers was most likely not swearing in that episode (he is, after all, a minister.) So how do we explain the "blooper?"

            Someone mentioned it on IMDB:

"If you don't believe me, just look at the bloopers from his show (Him setting up the tent is the most famous - all he does is laugh)."

Jimmy Kimmel has done spoofs of episodes by puting in unnecessary bleeps... I think it's only fueled the rumor.

I think some people are mixing up their memories.

However, there's no mention of this particular legend on snopes.com, just others about him being a naval officer, so maybe someone should consider submitting it.

Or someone could just order the video "Fred Rogers: America's Favorite Neighbor" which has bloopers.

I had seen a show on tv a few years back where the crew had played a prank on him during a taping of the show. In the opening of the show Mr Rogers opens the closet to put on his sweater only to be suprised by a blow up doll  They said he took it very well and even laughed about it.

I saw the scene this thread is about where Mr.Rogers is fighting with a camping tent trying to put it up and when he gives up he throws it to the ground and curses, of course the cursing was bleeped out. I saw this clip on a show like "Most Outrageous Moments" just a couple of years ago on one of the major networks. So, yes the clip does exist.

i have been driving myself nuts looking for anything on line about this post...i have been asking all relitives and looking for anything i can find...mostly because i refuse to believe a man who dedicated his whole life to teaching children to do good would be on tape swearing....i have seen several posts from people on other sites saying they remember the episode...some say he swore and yet some say he just laughed...i do know that the guy who played "chef brockett" on the show had an adult comedy show...and i do know over the years i have seen several spoofs....i think the whole swearing thing is made up and unless anybody has video proof of this i refuse to believe he swore ....i saw some thing on a site about the show that had a quote from mr mcfeely the delivery guy on the show that said he did say it was easy and the tent did fall down...but he laughed and it was all on the show i also believe people are getting ther memories mixed up

It could happen. My art teacher told me about an old episode of Porky Pig where he says the B word, and then later I found it on YouTube.

The video certainly does exist and I remember seeing it in a TV blooper show twenty plus years ago....and guess what, here it is!!!

                            http://video.pbs.org/program/1411677647/

PART of the clip is online, it is cut just after he throws the tent down. When shown on TV bloopers he walked forward and kicked the tent after he threw it down and I think but can no longer be positive he said "damn!" when he kicked it. It has stuck with me all these years that even when aggravated he was still silly about it all the way through and kept smiling and chuckling, in better humor "mad" than most people at "normal"!

Actually part of a in-house reel not meant for the general public.
