What, in your opinion is the best RPG for the PC? not including MMORPG's. I'm getting a gaming computer and would like to know some good games I should get for it. I know I'm getting the elder scrolls 4: oblivion!

I'm partial to the Baldur's Gate series, although I also love Diablo II.

Ultima VII part 1 & 2 (if you can find them)

Quest for Glory I-V (they're a mixture of adventure-games and RPGs so I don't know if they count but I love them)

The Magic Candle (if you don't have anything against dated graphics)

                and are they good?

                  Everquest

Black & White isn't an RPG, it's a strategy game. People seem to either love or hate it. I'd advise getting the first one to see for yourself. There is also a sequel, which came out last year, and an expansion pack for both games.

Neverwinter Nights I haven't played, so can't comment there.

I'll lump the MMOs all together here. I started out playing Everquest in 2000, and have played off and on since then. Out of all the still running fantasy RPGs, IMHO it is still the best. The graphics aren't pretty, but if you can get past that there's a lot to like about the game. It's well balanced as MMOs go, and there's tons of content. No matter what level you are, there's a place to hang out.

WoW is like Everquest redux. The graphics are prettier, but after 4 years of EQ, to me it felt very much like starting over. I didn't play it past the free month. If you love Warcraft, then you might give it a look. These days it's the most popular 'traditional' MMO.

As for the other two MMOs you mentioned: I played DAoC for a few months after it first came out so my experiences are probably no longer valid, and I've never played Guild Wars at all.

If you're looking for some good RPGs and don't mind them being old, I'd suggest:

                  Fallout 1 & 2
                  Planescape: Torment
                  System Shock 2
                  Wizardry 6-8
Might & Magic: World of Xeen and M&M:VII
                  Ultima Underworld 1 and 2
                  Ravenloft: The Stone Prophet

In 1998 Interplay released a compilation of 12 games that read like a who's who of classic RPGs called The Ultimate RPG Archive. It's a bit hard to find these days, but well worth it. It has many of the games I listed on it.

Neverwinter Nights is also a lot of fun, but make sure you get either the Platinum or Diamond editions so you can get the Hordes of the Underdark expansion. Of NN's expansions, I thought that was the best one. I've never played NN online, though, so I can't comment on that.

I haven't really played WoW, but I can say it's over rated. See this thread.

If you want a balanced solo & team MMORPG, then WOW is pretty much your basic choice. Not a lot of end-game stuff, but if you're a casual gamer like me, doesn't really matter.

Elders Scrolls 4: Oblivion is top-notch RPG if you are into the whole "sandbox" idea of choosing your own path. If you don't want to shell out the bucks, give Morrowind a shot.

Planescape: Torment, and Diablo 2 are probably my two favorite RPGs that never get old.

If you don't want to go really deep into the RPing and are more into Story and Action, I must suggest Beyond Good & Evil. It's probably the best game that no one has ever played.

As far as RPG's go, I'd check out:

                              Pool Of Radiance
                              The Temple of Elemental Evil
                              Icewind Dale I & II
                              Baldur's Gate I & II
                              Planescape:Torment
                              Neverwinter Nights

I've played WoW for about a year and a half off and on, finally quit the beginning of this year. But since the expansion is coming out soon I'm seriously pondering if I should start playing again.

Maybe it's in the way you use the word overrated, cause to me that word means that it doesn't deserve the praise that it gets, but I think you might mean that people overplay or get waaaay to into it.

Never Winter nights Hands down is the greatest RPG ever for the pc, and ever made for any console to boot.

You can fidn endless adventures with it and it so closesly mirrors pen and paper dnd its scary!! The THOUSANDS of player mods, mods made better then the actual offical games, are brilliant and just endkless endless endless.

as for mmorpgs, i have played them all, wow,uo,eq,coh, etcetc, and they all suck. i wish star wars gaklaxies didnt suck, but it does. i sworn off mmorpgs forever until they start doign them right.

though if i had to choose the best mmorpg, UO has the best mechanics and rulesets, just the worse graphics and gameplay.

Baldur's Gate is considered to be the best RPG on PC, so you might wanna check that out. But if you're one of those kids who likeS OO GRAPHICS and stuff, then you probably won't like it as much.
